Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Addicted to swaddling?

I know a lot of babies sleep better when swaddled. I have an almost 3 month old, obviously she's not rolling over yet. But I've read when she does we need to stop swaddling, so I am trying to break is slowly so its not a big deal when she does. (I'm a crazy woman worrying about what would happen if she rolled over while swaddled). Crazy hands wakes herself up & doesn't sleep as long when she's not swaddled. Any ideas on how to phase swaddling out?

Re: Addicted to swaddling?

  • Don't worry about it yet. Mine is 5 months and still swaddled.

  • My LO is 6 month and still swaddled.  We have the Halo swaddler sleep sack and you have the option of having hands in or out which is perfect for when they start to roll.  We plan on transitioning eventually to just the sleep sack and then nothing.  BUt we aren't in any hurry

  • We tried at 3.5 months to break the habit, but it didn't work out. DD rolled over at 12 weeks and she is almost 5 months. She has yet to roll over swaddled. We use the miracle blanket.
She sleeps so well swaddled that I'm not going to mess with that until she shows signs of wanting to not be swaddled.

  • I'm like you, very paranoid about the swaddling and rolling over thing so once DD started rolling, we transitioned to Merlin's magic sleepsuit. It's basically the same as swaddling (DD never even noticed the difference between the woombie and the sleepsuit) but their arms are out and the chances of your little one being even able to roll over while wearing it are very slim but if they do, at least their arms are free so it's much safer then a swaddle.

We used it for DD1 until she was 7 months old.

At 7 months, were you then struggling with transitioning from the Magic Sleep Suit to nothing at all? I've looked at those, but if I'm going to have to make a transition, I'd rather only make one from swaddle to no swaddle...not swaddle to magic suit to no swaddle. Does that make sense?

I know what you mean. For us, we were using it for naps and bedtime and we struggled for nap transition for about a week. As soon as she was fine without it for naps we took it away at bedtime and it went great. This time we are only using it for bedtime and not for naps so I'm thinking it will be much easier.

  • My daughter was 10 months before she started sleeping without the swaddle... NOT Kidding. She liked it and never rolled over in her crib, so we just went with it. Do what works for you and don't worry about them rolling over. I think it's pretty hard for them to roll without their upper body being able to move. My 4 month old is rolling over sometimes while on the floor, but doesn't show interest in rolling over when he is swaddled yet. We tried to break him of it, but it was terrible, but right now we aren't getting any sleep anyway. I might try to break him of it again this week. I mainly want to break him of it because he doesn't fit in the swaddle very well anymore and I don't want to buy more of them.

  • i would swaddle LO only at night, we would use a sleep sack during the day.  made the transition super easy. LO was constantly busting out of the swaddle to get to her hands, so I stopped cold turkey at 3 months. we had a few rough nights, but then she was fine.

i liked the Halo Swaddle Sleepsacks as you could still swaddle their body, but arms were out.

  • I swaddled my oldest son until he was 6 months old. Phasing it out can be a little tough but take it a step at a time and don't rush it. My youngest son hates to be swaddled so we haven't had to do it with him. My oldest can't live without his Binky and my youngest won't take one at all. It's funny how different babies can be!
  • Same here.  My LO is 3 months old and we've swaddled him in the Halo Swaddle Sleep sack since birth and he has been a great sleeper.  Just in the past couple weeks, he uses his super-strength to wriggle right out of a tight swaddle and get his hands to his face.  We've been transitioning to just a plain old sleep sack for naps, which is going well, but nighttimes have been tough.  I feel like his great sleep habits are regressing.  We have since stopped swaddling him, but, like someone else posted, he wakes himself up with his crazy flailing and is not sleeping as well.  Is this just a phase, maybe?  Last night when he woke up after just 3 hours, I let him cry it out.  He soothed himself in about 15 mins.  Not sure what will happen these next few nights.  Any insight is welcomed!!
  • I have a 3month old and he loves being swaddled especially since his flailing arms wake him up. But he has been learning to roll and likes it and I checked on him sleeping and he was on his side swaddled and the only reason he didn't roll was because his legs were hitting the side of the cribhe moves around alot sleeping always in a different spot then I placed him. It scared me because he would of rolled. Talk about heart stopper. So I have been still swaddling him with his arms out. But it hasnt been going that great luckily when wakes he soothes himself to sleep. Lastnight was a good night he fell right to sleep with arms out yay! But I dont swaddle him for his naps and he doesn't mind it only for night which I always done. Since reading responses I'm going to try one arm in, one arm out and see how that goes.
