To those who have weaned recently, or with older children, here is what I was thinking, does it sound about right? I used to pump 3X, and nurse 2X a day.
First week: Dropped one pumping session. (Pump 2X, nurse 2X)
Two week: Drop a pumping session (Pump 1X, nurse 2X)
Third week: Drop last pumping session (nurse 2X)
Fourth week: Drop one nursing session (nurse 1X)
Then I figured I will re-evaluate and see if he is ready to stop all together, or if we should continue the last night-time session for a bit. Does that sound reasonable/doable?
Re: Weaning time line
That's what we did and it worked great. I am still nursing in the morning, so I haven't dropped that last one yet, but I think we're really close to dropping it because my supply has just tanked.
Your plan seems very reasonable. I would just say take it day by day. If you are finding yourself uncomfortable, then add back in a nursing session or a short pump just to relieve any discomfort.
Silly question - with DD I followed that and she ate a little more food.
DS still wants additional bottles. Do I move from EBM to formula, then start dropping feedings? I worry that this kid will never be ready to give up the calories much less the habit of nursing.
Have you tried WCM? We still nurse but he gets 2 bottles of WCM on Monday and Friday. I'm afraid Jackson isn't going to be able to give up the nursing habit either. He totally uses me for comfort when he's not feeling well.
I had the same concern because I'm not totally convinced my DD is eating enough varied foods to nutritionally and calorically satisfy her, so I did switch to formula and will likely continue formula past a year if she doesn't start eating more fruits and vegetables.
She has gotten much better at eating real food in general, so I'm hopeful she will make great strides in the next month or so, but I wasn't confident in her regular eating, so we went to formula.
My DS was the opposite. He was a fabulous eater and would eat anything, so when I weaned him a little before 1 year, I went to WCM early. I think it's a personal choice based on what you and your pediatrician think is appropriate for your child.
I am a paranoid freak about WCM. DD was allergic to milk proteins (seemingly all of them from the food trials we did). DS eats cheese, etc so he hasn't had any issues. However, making the switch is sort of a leap of faith for me - so soy formula (ped recommended) it is for now.....if I can actually cease nursing. I know I need to - eventaully - and I know that he's not getting that much even when he nurses, I am just having a hard time doing it.
Anyone else ready to wean, starting a schedule like the one above and emotional at all about it?
I am definitely emotional about it, way more then I thought I would be. I thought I would be throwing a party in the streets. That's why we might hang on to that nightly nursing session for awhile, if I can.
My Colton...Growing up so fast!
And Coralee, his baby sister...On the way!
I have tons of questions about this too- I'm glad you posted. Hopefully you don't mind me hi-jacking your post with another questions.
I get that you replace nursing/bottles with WCM, but what about bottles that aren't paired with meal? Do I turn that into a solids snack with a small drink? (He takes a bottle at daycare @ 9 and sometimes at 3).
I'm also nervous about getting rid of the MOTN feeding and before bed nursing. I'm sure it'll go fine.
hi-jack away! I think you replace the in betweeners with a bottle/sippy and/or snack. I am for sure the most nervous about the before bed feeding... I know I was reding the other day that they should only have a certain amount of milk so that they get nutrients from other sources, but I can't remember how much it was...that's really helpful, right?
