4cm dilated, bloody show, no contractions!

I feel like I'm going to end up one of those ladies who didn't know she was pregnant and ended up birthing baby in a toilet.

I'm 4cm dilated and 75% effaced as of yesterday. My doc did a membrane sweep, and said he wouldn't be surprised if I went in to labor last night. Well, I didn't. But this morning I think I had my "bloody show" or whatever that is. I'm still a bit confused as to the difference of your whole mucus plug and the bloody show, but this was a BIG glob of bloody mucus.

But I'm not having any contractions. And I really haven't been. How did I get to 4cm with no noticeable contractions?

I'm nervous that I'll end up delivering my baby in the car on the way to the hospital because I won't know I'm fully dilated! (Ok, that's a stretch, I know. I'm just so anxious!).

  • I'm with you on this! I feel like I haven't had any contractions lately. I haven't progressed in dilation since last week, still at 3. I was 75% effaced last week, he didn't tell me what I was today just that my cervix was soft. I lost my mucus plug over the week, and still kind of have been but today I noticed the bloody show after my exam.

I hope that when I go into labor I'll make it to the hospital in time & that I'll know it's actually labor lol. :)

  • I had my membranes swept last week at my 40w appointment and had bloody mucous for two days post-sweep. I am also dilated and effaced with an engaged baby at +1 station. Still no baby and just started to get non-timeable painful contractions last night. I guess what I am trying to say is: don't get your hopes up. But, according to The Birth Partner, a membrane sweep can decrease labor by 40 minutes!
  • why does everything have to be so difficult... cant we just have a digital screen on our tummy to tell us what is going on and beep when we should go to the hospital or something... everyone's reactions and pain thresholds are so different...
  • Had my membranes swept at 40w1d, lost my plug or had bloody show 2 days later. Have been having nontimeable contractions or cramping since. I've learned not to get my hopes up even though I'm confused and disheartened at how long it is taking.

I believe you'll know when your labor actually begins. Just be ready because if you're at a four, you may progress to fully dilated quickly!

that'd be amazing...but it'll give you a couple hour notice ahead of time so you can shower, dry your hair, get ready and drive nicely to the hospital to check in and sit down and baby just pops out! haha

ohwell in the mean time....eat ice cream and watch a movie alone and enjoy it.

  • got the bloody show/mucus plug thing started this morning too at 5am.  kind of freaked me out a little bit until i redid some research and basically figured out that i have no idea if it will be today/tomorrow/or a week or two.  i did realize i probably should have already bought pads, but i remedied that this morning.  no contractions, so i'm just going to go along with regular life until something new happens.  good luck!
  • I walked around at 5cm for over a week. Hopefully you'll have a short labor but I'm willing to bet you'll know when real labor starts and you'll make it to the hospital in time :) having the bloody show is a good sign things are definitely moving along for you! GL
