Best IEP meeting ever?

So we had an IEP meeting yesterday.  And I went prepared emotionally and otherwise.  And it was shocking.

He has met (and in most cases surpassed) ALL of the goals we set up for him last year.  He has made amazing progress in all areas.

Like, woah.  I mean, I think he is amazing every single day, but NONE of his IEP meetings have ever gone this way, I usually leave and go home for a good cry, and so I was not expecting it AT ALL.  So to have "good" news for once was shocking.  Amazing, and awesome, but I felt kind of stunned.

So, we set up some new goals for him for next year.  That include a regular Kinder class with a few accomodations.  Continued OT and social skills group.

I feel good, but a little scared?  Cautiously optimistic? A bit of disbelief?  I'm so so glad he's made great progress, but I'm not in any kind of denial that this could go any which way especially as he gets older and the social aspect gets more complicated.

But damn.  Progress.  A lot of it.  I guess we are doing something right.

  • That's fantastic! Good for you and your DS!

I know that too-good-to-be-true feeling. And yeah, things can go the other way in the future. But enjoy the heck out of the good times, you know? It's great to have the validation of seeing awesome progress!

  • That is really great!  I was also very pleased with our most recent IEP. And kindy next year will be some accomodations with OT and social skills group.

I'm always waiting for the other shoe to drop as well. The funny thing is, it won't drop until I push him out of his comfort zone. Right now he's sort of coasting along with all the same teachers and classmates he's had for over a year. I have to proactively find situations that he finds difficult and see how he responds to them. I'm trying to figure out what extra-curricular I can sign him up for this spring. I want to be able to set him up for success, but also challenge him.

Good job and keep us updated!!

    That's so great!

Our last IEP meeting was wonderful. I think how smooth everything is going has actually increased my anxiety for next year and K. We have such an amazing team that goes above and beyond in preschool. Also, I'm not really sure what's making it all click but something is working because DS's progress has been much better than expected. I'm nervous about next year.
