Those who have weaned a swaddle-dependent baby

How the heck did you do it?

We have swaddled Kellen since day 1 and he is so dependent on it! It is a huge sleep cue for him and when I dont swaddle him and place him in the crib at night he just starts flailing around like its party time and eventually crying because he doesn't know how to get to sleep.

We decided to stick with it last night and he was up every 20-30 mins (with one lucky 2 hour stretch in there somewhere) and got a total of about 4 1/2 hours of sleep! (I got about 2 1/2). Watching him ont he monitor, he would cry/fuss for 5-15 mins, start falling asleep and spend about 10 mins falling asleep and jerking back awake and falling asleep ad jerking back awake and after about 5 or 6 failed attempts at sleeping he would fuss for another 5-15 mins and the process would begin again.

At 2:30 am, he woke and we watched him fuss, start to fall asleep, and wake himself up over and over again until 5am!! I want to get him out of the swaddle because it is causing so many issues with his night time sleep, but I don't know how many more night of this LO or I can take!

Has anyone else had a rough time with the transition but had LO pull through? Thanks!

Re: Those who have weaned a swaddle-dependent baby

  • Tried it. :( It didn't work. We still had the same issues as with no sleepsuit only with the sleepsuit he was sweating like crazy! We tried keeping the room cooler, but that sleep suit is so dang hot and he gets super sweaty when he fusses at night. Plus I know we will only have to wean from the sleepsuit as well (and he is already getting to big for it), so I just want to get it over with.

I am thinking his frustration with being swaddled is part of our sleep issues in the first place. He hates the swaddle, yet he needs the swaddle. Its such a nightmare :(

  • We may try the one arm out. We gave it a go a while back but it was a short trial and he may be better at it now.

Also, we put him on his tummy last night and have for a while now  for naps and that helps for naps, but we have to literally hold him down until he falls asleep or he will just roll over. At night he just rolls right over. boo :(

Maybe we will try the one arm thing again....

  • Sorry, I don't have any advice but I feel your pain. DS is the same exact way. We've only tried to unswaddle for naps so far. We tried one arm out at a time and I could get him to sleep but he was up after 15-20 min and wouldn't go back to sleep. I figured I'd just leave him be for a while then last night he rolled from back to belly fully swaddled in my bed and that freaked me out. So I just tried to put him down for a nap completely unswaddled and it ended up taking 20 min to get him to sleep, he slept for 3 minutes, and after trying to get him down for another 10 minutes I gave up and swaddled him.

Kellen has rolled over in his swaddle before too! Another reason why I feel it is time to wean.

  • I have no advice for you but I'm totally sticking my head in the sand on this. We tried to break the swaddle habit around 3 months. DD didn't really sleep for a month so we're back to swaddling for ALL sleep. Oy vey. I'm thinking that we might try to go without the swaddle for her mid-day nap soon just to start the transition.

  • Between day light saving change, sleep regression, and ditching the swaddle we had seven very long sleep deprived weeks. It does get better eventually though. ::hugs::

Vive we most have sleep trained the same week! It was a day light saving nightmare! We did make it through though. OP, we gave DD a security blanket to hold on to while she sleeps. It seems to help with the arm flailing and jerking. I got the aiden and Anais security blankets because they are super thin and breathable. She loves to put them in her head but it has never been a problem so far.

We tried a "lovey" last night. We used on of those stuffed animals that has a small satin blanket for a body. He did fall asleep holding it once or twice, but still couldnt stay asleep.

And y'all, he sleeps with his legs UP! Like in the air! Thats half the problem because they fall down and wake him up!
