Pregnant after 35

Severe Rib Pain/Possible Bruised Rib

Ladies,

I just wanted to post this to see if any of you have experienced this same thing and could shed some light on what is going on. This is my 2nd pregnancy and I never experienced this with my first but over the last several weeks I have had very sore ribs on my right side. They are sore to the touch and it hurts to move just about any way no matter if I'm sitting, standing, or lying on my side but it was somewhat "bearable". The soreness even seemed to subside a bit last week until I got this cough a few days ago.

Coughing is putting pressure on those ribs and creating more soreness and then last night I got into a coughing fit and I swear I heard a "cracking" sound and the pain in my ribs has been unbearable ever since. I can barely move without crying out in pain this morning and it's excruciating to try and pick up my 2.5 yr old.

Could I have a bruised or cracked rib? Is there anything that can be done? I am 3 weeks from my due date and I can't imagine trying to labor with this kind of pain in my ribs even with an epidural!! I have an appt. with my OB today, but I'm not sure there is anything they can do. It's not like I can have an X-ray at this point.

Re: Severe Rib Pain/Possible Bruised Rib

  • I started having rib pain a fews ago, it hurts to laugh also. The pain is located right under my breast bone, I read in a pregnancy book that it is from the baby pushing the organs up into that region. This is my 3rd pregnancy and the first of me experiencing this type of pain. I hope this helps.

  • Thanks for the info.

Update: I visited with OB today and they said they could give me a chest xray to validate if it's a fracture or separated rib or not but it wouldn't change the outcome. I still have to wait and heal. They did prescribe some pain meds so I'll see if that helps any. :(

  • I am sorry you are going through this.  I had similar pain during my first pregnancy.  It was excruciating and there was not too much that I could do for relief.  I was desperate and actually "wrapped" an ACE bandage around my lower rib area for support.  Compresses helped a bit too.  The pain would come and go during my third trimester, and I hope yours resolves soon.

  • Sorry this is happening to you, it is super painful. I have a dislocated rib right now and have had it for quite some time. My chiropractor will "put it into place" after Erinn is born. Some days I wrap it as well but that has been making me feel clausterphobic since my belly has gotten bigger. It makes sleeping really difficult. Hang in there.
