ahh crap, now what do I? BFing question

I hurt my back a few days ago and my massage therapist gave me a product called cryoderm.  Its a heating gel you put on your back.  I put it on a few hours ago and just now read the small print. it says to consult your doctor before using if breastfeeding. I've washed it off but now what? should i feed her when she wakes up or use formula. and I've just now realized that she sprayed it all over me when I had my massage a few days ago and I fed my daughter. I am livid!!! I may have given my daughter a potentially dangerous drug and I didn't even know it. grr....

  • I woudn't nurse her again until you've consulted a doctor. You should pump & save it, and then only dump it if you learn it's tainted.

  • I agree with others that you could consult your OB or lactation consultant.

I have found that pretty much every drug says to consult a doctor if you are breastfeeding even the drugs that the doctor has told me is safe to use while breastfeeding. Not to dismiss the safety of the drug, as I would always ask a doctor regardless of what the fine print said.

  • Call la leche league they usually have a copy of the Dr. Hale book and can look it up for you.

  • This is Dr. Hale's website: https://www.infantrisk.com/

This is where you can search the database to find the risk categories for different drugs: https://www.nlm.nih.gov/news/lactmed_announce_06.html

I would check those places and call to speak with an IBCLC if you can.  Most medicine packaging says to consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding...it could just bea precaution and it's ok.

  • i second the lactmed rec.  it talks  about any studies that are done so you can make your own informed decision.  if you can't find the brand name of what you are using, check for active ingredients etc.

  • I actually looked it up, and there were ingredients in the cryoderm that were not listed in the Lactmed, which would be a red flag for me. Menthol and Arnica were seemingly harmless, but the MSM and ILEX look like proprietary elements that probably contain something you don't want LO ingesting.
