Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Vit D with Iron drops

I posted this in 3-6 then realized we are just days away from 6-9, so perhaps my question is more relevant here.

So...per her pedi, my almost 6 mo old should be taking vit d with iron every day as she is exclusively breastfed.  Problem is, she just takes it in her mouth then lets it ooze out.  I can't blame her - it smells really, really bad.  But without it, she's at risk for anemia.  Any tips on getting her to swallow the drops?

Re: Vit D with Iron drops

  • Do you slowly squeeze it into the side of her mouth?

I have to give DD meds by laying her on her back and slowly squeezing it into her mouth.  It usually takes about 4 squirts :)

  • I also should've said she won't take a bottle!
  • Yep, side of her mouth.  I'm going to take them into her 6 mo appt and make doc see what she does.  If I weren't concerned about her health, it's actually really funny to watch!
  • Try Tri-vi-sol.  Our pedi recommened it as the other ones a lot of ppl complained their lo's woudln't take it and it tasted bad.

Also, like pp said, don't give it all in one squirt.  2-3 squirts and let them have time to swallow it.

  • We are just using vitamin D, no iron. The first kind I got you had to give a whole dropper full but the new stuff you only give one drop. I think the brand is Carlson. Per the pediatrician I just put a drop on me before LO nurses.
  • This is what we use and he's really good about swallowing it. I give it to him in about 3 squirts.

  • It's tastes real bad. After you get it mouth, blow in her face. Sounds mean but it will make her swallow. Maybe you can try putting half a dose in a  spoon of food if she has started solids. Then other half in another spoonful. I know all too well bout forcing medicine in a baby's mouth with our reflux issues. It's a battle. But stick the dropper as far back of cheeck as you can. Then as soon as you take it out blow!  Good luck.
