Car seat/booster WWYD?

I have to replace 2 carseats within the next few weeks.  DS has outgrown the weight and height for the Cosco Sceneras (40 lbs and I forgot the height).  We bought them because they were cheap and highly rated.  One is in DH's car and one is in Grandma's.

We really don't want to go to a high back booster that uses the seat belt but our only other option would be another Evenflo Truimph which I have in my car.  For the price it would only go up to 65 lbs.  But it has the 5 pt harness.

Have you switched to a highback booster?  And how do you like it and which one do you have?  thanks!

Re: Car seat/booster WWYD?

  • I bought this:

For DD not too long ago because I had to replace the seat in my car because she had outgrown the one I had.  It's got a 5 pt harness, but when she gets old/big enough it can convert to a seatbelt positioning high back booster.

  • P.S. It was only like $65 on Babies R Us when I bought it.

3 year olds are NOT ready for boosters. In fact the law is 4 years old AND 40 pounds in most states. You need a harness to booster like the Evenflo Maestro, Graco Nautilus, Britax Frontier, etc. These will last until your child no longer needs a booster age 8 to 10 usually.

DS just turned 4 and is 41 lbs. The harness to booster one's I've been seeing online you have to convert to a booster at 40 pounds and you lose the 5 pt harness at that point and it is the seat belt.  This is what I'm trying to avoid without paying $200+ times 2.

  • I hope you mean a high back harnessed booster, high back boosters using a seat belt has a minimum age is 4 and would be very unsafe for a three year old (looking at your ticker).

For DD, when she turned 3 we bought the Britax Frontier (harness limit 85lbs, 57in). It was $199 on amazon and will be able to be used as a harnessed booster longer than most, but can also be used as a high back and backless booster - so it will last another 4+ years for her. Another highly recommended option is the Evenflo SecureKid300 or 400 (harness limit 65lbs and 50inches). A more money conscious seat is the Evenflo Maestro (harness limit 50lbs and 50inches) I have found for as low as $55 and comes highly recommended.

  • My ticker is wrong and I have to fix it at home.  DS is 4 years old and 41 lbs.

I am really liking the maestro because it gives us 9 more lbs using the 5 pt harness.  I wish I could find it for closer to the $55.

  • We have an Evenflo Symphony. It uses the harness to like 65 lbs, but then does convert to a regular booster with a seatbelt, so it would work until they moved put of a booster.

  • DS is still in his Evenflo car seat with the 5 point harness in both mine and FI's car. He is still within the weight limit, and the 5 point harness makes me feel better. However, FI's mom bought a high back booster that uses the seatbelt, and I DO NOT like it. It makes me too nervous. I want to say that she has this one (sorry, no clicky)

  • Most harnessed boosters say that you can convert to a high back booster at 40 lbs, not that you have to. I know the graco nautilus has a 65 lb. barnes harness weight limit.

I wouldn't move him to a high back booster. 4 years and 40 lbs is the bare minimum. A better indication of readiness is whether you can trust him to sit correctly 100 of the time. No falling asleep and no leaning over, no playing with the seat belt, etc. We didn't switch DD until she was 6.

We have a Graco Nautilus that we paid $115 for. The instructions say you can go to booster at 40lbs, but the harness limit is 65lbs. We will be harnessing up to 65lbs, and considering DD1 weighs only 30lbs at nearly 3yrs old, I expect we'll harness until at least 5-6yrs old.

  • Thank you so much for the suggestions, I looked at all of them and didn't realize the booster combo conversion one's had a higher harness limit.

So I looked at Kohls and found the Securekid 300 for $124.00 plus I got 20% (borntosave) off on their baby gear sale, plus I found another 15% (Chilly15) off that worked in addition to the 20%.  So with tax I got 2 of them for $178.02 ($89 each, woo hoo!).  and free shipping.

So if you need any baby gear look at kohls.

The evenflo Securekid300 has latch and the harness goes up to 65 lbs/ 50 inches.  After that you can go to the booster mode.

    Thanks ladies!

  • We have 2 Graco Turbo Boosters.  BUT they are for my 5 year old and 7 year olds.  I would never but a 3 yo in a booster.
  • Glad you found seats! Just a note to check your vehicle and seat's latch limits. Many of them will only allow latch usage to child's weight of 40lbs. So you might need to install the seat in the car using the seatbelt, but your child can then use the harness.

thanks, I'll check but seatbelt to secure is good as long as I can use a harness.

  • You need to page Supercutebenz on Gear for the LATCH limits, they just released a new document and she has access. 40 lbs is wrong in most cases. I have a Dodge Caravan, the limit is 65lbs including the kid and the seat. You have to ask specific to the vehicle and the car seat.
