I know your girls are mostly, or maybe completely, off formula now so I had some questions for you. How much WCM are they getting each day and how often? Did you just replace formula bottle feedings with WCM?

  • They're completely off as of a week or so ago.  They were already down to 3 bottles a day so we didn't change feeding times really.  What I do when I'm with them is I put 8 ounces of milk in a sippy cup and offer it at each meal.  Usually they'll drink an ounce or two with meals, then I put it in the fridge and give it to them again later on before naps or bedtime.  We might stop offering it at meals and just offer water then but I was concerned with how much they were drinking.  Of the original 8 ounce bottle there would usually be 0-2 ounces left for Olivia and 1-3 ounces left for Natalia when they were finished with the milk and went to sleep.  We don't use bottles anymore and only use straw sippy cups.  I put an extra ounce in the sippy cups (when we did bottles they only got 7 ounce bottles) because with the straw cups it can be a real pain to get that last bit out.

When I went to the doctor with Natalia for something last week I asked about how much milk they need to be drinking now that they're completely on WCM (I said "whole cow's milk" instead of just "whole milk" to the doctor and she looked at me funny, I spend too much time on here!) and she said 16-24 ounces.  She said anything less then 16 ounces is a concern that they're not getting enough calcium (although when I said that they eat a good amount of yogurt, cheese, etc. she said that they're fine then) and anything more and the concern is that they'll get too full from milk and not eat enough other food.  I would guess that when they're with me all day Natalia drinks 18-21 ounces and Olivia drinks 21-24 ounces (but Nat is better with solids).

  • Okay that doesn't sound like TOO much of a change from what we're starting to do. He's not great with the sippy so we'll have to work on that more. Thanks for your input!

  • I don't like the cold turkey approach (although I know it works for many) so what I did was I just started offering the sippy cup first.  At first they would only drink an ounce or two from it and then I would dump the rest into a bottle and finish the feeding that way.  We tried to push it but once they started really getting mad we would switch to the bottle.  It took a little over a week, but each day they would drink more and more out of the sippy cup until they were drinking basically all of it out of there.  We put their bottles away a week ago.  It's amazing how much more counter space we have without that drying rack!
