I want my pre-preggers body back!

Hey Ladies,

I am near the end of my pregnancy and just dying to feel the way I did pre-pregnancy.  I have gained a full 40lbs! I feel so sluggish and down right fat.  I am planning a fitness journey to get my pre-pregnancy body back. Any thoughts? suggestions? Do any of you feel this way?

Re: I want my pre-preggers body back!

  • It will never happen.
My youngest is 2.5 years old now and things are definitely the best they have been in 8 years (since I started having kids), but there is loose skin and stretch marks.  My chest was small to begin with, but now it is flat and droopy.

I think just taking the first 2-3 months to adjust to being a mom and nursing if applicable is enough without worrying about weight or your body.  I will say that baby weight did tend to come off quickly w/o worrying about it...  but it's the skin and toning that is the real problem.

Good Luck with the end of your pregnancy and your baby!

  • By the end of my pregnancy with DD, I was ready to not be big and pregnant any more!  I gained 23 lbs and figured that I would lose the weight pretty quickly because I'm very active and I was breastfeeding.  It took me a little more time to find the time/energy to get back into regular exercise, but once I did, it felt great.  I actually weigh less now than I did before DD, but my shape has changed a little bit (more tummy, flatter boobs after BF)!

After you have your baby, just make sure to rest and enjoy your time with LO.  You'll get back into a routine soon enough.  Good luck!

  • Omg, did you say never!!! I miss me. I0 get all the sacrifices of motherhood for sure but is it wrong to want to feel the way you knew yourself for so long?
  • dukestar I am feeling that fatigue now. I think that is what worries me. I plan to take recovery time of course baby and hubby time. I think the concern is if I dont get it on a schedule I won't take care of me. Since pregnant I have been reading all these blogs and talking to friends and it appears that time becomes the biggest commodity.

It may never be 100% the same, but it is different for everyone.  My chest was not droopy and I didn't really get any stretch marks.  I wasn't in the best shape pre-pregnancy the first time around, and once I got into running and working out post baby my body was the strongest it had ever been.  Don't freak out.

  • It can happen.  I was in good shape and thin before my first, but I gained 60 pounds with him.  I used a combination of weight lifting and HIIT cardio and lost it all, plus an extra 10 and looked better.  Check out the book The New Rules of Lifting for Women.  Combine that with High Intensity Interval Training.  I plan to use the same to lose the weight after this one.

I never said it is wrong to want to return to your pre-PG self.  For me, I had 3 kids in 4 years and my body changed.  I weigh less now than I did when I got PG w/ any of them but my body is still not as it was before I had kids.

  • You aren't likely to get to exactly where you were pre-pregnancy.  Your body changes A LOT with pregnancy.  However, that doesn't mean you're doomed.  I've been slowly working my way into a better shape than I have ever in my life been (as 40 is creeping up way too quickly).  It's a lot of hard work (sacrifice occasionally) and really has been an overall lifestyle change for me.

I don't know if I agree with this.  Although this is my first child, I have quite a few friends who had babies over the age of 35 and are in the best shape of their lives. I feel like the older I get, the more physically fit I become (weird, I know). I've worked out 5-6 days a week my entire pregnancy and feel really good (despite the traditional pregnancy symptoms).  Everyone is different.  But who cares if your body isn't EXACTLY the way it was before.  Sometimes different can be good.  Besides, you will have a beautiful child to show for it. :-)

  • @Ajetter- pre-pregnancy I worked out regularly. Of course give or take a few slacks : ).  I am really not expecting to be perfect, I think I just started freaking when I hit 40lbs.  I have also been working our during my pregnancy I stopped in the last month because I was involved in a car accident and it left me a banged up.  I am doing alot better but still sore so I did not want to strain.  Thanks for the encouragement.

I will definitely check it out thanks!!  I need a new work out routine.  I normally do a lot of  cardio (running and elliptical) and then weights.  Where I slack are abs and it appears I am going to need to put some real work into that.

  • LOL, no worries @Amegard, I know you just want me to be realistic.
  • @sunidaze and @jglenn4 I am motivated to get back in shape, like you jglenn4, I worked out for the first 8 months until my accident and that had me feeling good.  In this last month the pain prevented me from working out and I think that made me even more sluggish than normal.  Then the weight on top of it, just left me a little overwhelmed.

I totally agree with the HIIT training.  I still do it now.  If, after giving birth, you do about three times a week, it will transform your body.

  • If you find yours, let me know. I'm still looking.
  • Everyone is different. After two babies, my body is not the same as it was pre-babies. BUT, after my first baby, it was pretty much the same. It also depends on your age, fitness level before you were pregnant, etc.

My body after two babies is not the same like I said, but I still feel sexy and strong! I think you will find that once you start working out again, you will feel good about your body, although it may take some time (again, everyone is different). For me, what helps is I have lost the desire to be super skinny and to be strong and healthy. So before, although I was a size 6, and now I am more of an 8/10, I still feel good about myself, I eat well, exercise, and really, with two kids running around and a full time job, I don't have that much time to worry about looking like I did before!

I agree.  I had 2 kids 15 months apart and was 3 lbs. away from pre-pg weight and my stomach was a mushy mess.  I just turned 40 and being home right now I really, really have to watch what I eat.

  • Hey mommas,
turns out I'm not that crazy after all. Remember I told you guys I was feeling very sluggish. Well at my doctor's appointment today I found out I have really high blood pressure. So now I am resting until my little angel decides to join us in this world. I still plan to get on my workout grind as soon as I can.I have decided to start a blog of the journey and I'm hoping that you guys will join in with me to take the challenge while sharing your own journey and struggles. Anyone interested?
  • I just finished having my fourth in 7 years and I am 35. There is no reason you cannot look good and be in shape again. I am a firm believer also in the New Rules of Lifting for Women and the New Rules of Lifting BOOKS! THEY gave me my body back better than I have ever been. The more muscle mass you have, the better you will look. It will help your skin appear firmer and make you look more vibrant. It is all within your reach if you work for it. The 30 day shred is also a great place to start when you are homebound with small children. I have never looked better after my fourth.
  • in ways, I like the way I look better now than before.  I was super boney and even though I weigh less than I did then, my chest is wider and my arms are bigger.  I'm sure that's because I work out, so that alone has changed my body.  I never really worked out before.  I guess I just have that womanly shape now.  Things that will never go back: my boobs.  I was a 34A and I'm a 34B now.  How come they are bigger, I have no idea.  I can feel the skin underneath my boobs and I've never been able to do that before.  a little lift would be nice.  Your feet.  Mine are a half size bigger than before.  sucks that there are shoes I have that I will never be able to wear again.  My butt.  it's smaller than before but I have stretch marks on it.  At least I never got marks on my belly. I have a hernia that was not there before that bothers me and I need to get that fixed this year. It's ok though because I feel the most comfortable in my own skin now than I ever have before.  You can loose all that weight, trust me.  I lost 84lbs, 76 pregnancy weight.  It's possible.  Just stay committed. I was back in the gym 6 weeks pp. 5 days a week
