Vote on a bridesmaid dress? PIPs

It really won't let me make a clicky even though I've done it before. Anyways, I need help! I got short notice to find a dress and order it in the next few weeks. The bride wanted us to pick from a few designers, but I couldn't find any of the dresses anywhere near me to try on. So the bride said I could get a dress from a store near me because we are all wearing different shades of gray. I went yesterday to try on dresses by myself because my family and good friends are 2+ hours away. My choices were limited to long and chiffon (and not sweetheart neckline, it looks terrible on me) so here is what I got -- and my dress will be in a dark gray / charcoal color.

#1

#2 (the sash would just be the same as the rest of the dress I think. Also, I admit I wore the short version of this dress in white for my own casual wedding)

image

#3 (I would probably just cut off the weird bow - they said it comes off)

image

#4

image

#5 -- I didn't get to try this one on, but it's similar to the others? And this is by the designer the bride originally wanted me to chose from.

image

#6 -- same as above, didn't get to try it on, but it is a similar shape/style and the designer the bride first wanted

Help me!! Any input? FTR, I am 5'3 and size 16.

  • 4 or 5. I'm always a fan of a dress that can possibly be worn again and doesn't scream bridesmaid dress. I think either one could be cut shorter and be cute cocktail dresses.

  • #2 looks very similar to my bridesmaid dresses, which I loved and so did all of my girls.  It was such a flattering style to every body type!  I also really like #5, although of course it's nerve-wracking to buy without having tried on.  I don't like #3 or #4 very much, and I much prefer #5 to #6 (although they're similar).  I think #1 looks great on you.

Sorry, not too much help but at least I narrowed it down a bit, hopefully!

  • Also, do they have to be long? With you being on the petite side, shorter cut may suit your frame better.

  • I like #1 and #2 they are both very nice.  I think my favorite is #1, the 1 shoulder neckline is very flattering on you!!

I pick 5. It has the slight sweetheart neckline which is softer than straight across. Also, the line of the dress is flattering. Number 1 is not good. Please never put that on again. 6 is ok, but is missing that flattering angle across the front of the dress. Plus, if it were me, I'd stick with the designer the bride wanted. My rule of thumb is to order big...it's far easier and cheaper to take a dress in, rather take a dress out.

    Thanks for your honesty? haha.

I really wanted to stick with the designer the bride wanted, but I honestly can't find the dresses ANYWHERE to try on. I called stores for 2 days straight. I really like #5, I'm just afraid to buy it without trying it on!!

  • I love number 2. It' s very flattering on you. I think it will look even better in charcoal. The last two are lovely but I would be too paranoid to buy without being able to try on.

I don' t think sweetheart necklines are flattering on everyone, especially when you have a large chest. They look terrible on me and make my shoulders look very broad. I would try to find something as close as possible and by the same designer if you are going to order one you haven't tried on.

Sorry if I was harsh. I'm all about telling it like it is when it comes to fashion. I know it's freaky to buy a dress without trying it on, but if you're measure properly it should fit fine and can be altered to make it fit you perfectly.

It's ok, I don't mind, I was just surprised at how um direct your comment was Stick out tongue I had the store yesterday measure me so I'm not worried about the size. I would go a little big just to be sure. I'm just worried about not getting to try on the style of the dress. The slight sweetheart neckline scares me. I look bad in sweetheart.

    See?

But this dress is not even an option. It looks too similar to a dress that was already picked by another girl.

  • 2 is my favorite.  I also like 4.  5 looks nice, but I would be nervous about not being able to try it on.
  • #5 is the long version of my bridesmaid dresses now that I look at it on my computer and not on my phone.  My MOH was exactly your size, maybe even shorter, and it looked great on her.  We added spaghetti straps for any bridesmaid who wanted them.  I agree with Lisajay; sweetheart flatters you more.

Which do you like best? Which do you feel the prettiest in? If the dress makes you feel good you' 'll be more confident.

  • I think the cut of #1 is best on you!
  • Another vote for #1 - it lengthens you by drawing the eye up.  All the others draw the eyes across your body, which isn't great when you're not a supermodel.

PLUS I hate strapless dresses at weddings.  There is nothing flattering about tugging at your top the whole time so that your breasts don't fall out.

  • 2 is the most flattering on you for sure.
    image
  • I feel like 1 is a fit issue. Have you tried on a smaller size? I always measure a size bigger because my bust is so big they usually want to go up. My waist is 4 sizes smaller if you're counting by just even numbers so its hard to get a good fit. The waist line looks a little too low and its giving you frump boobs. The bottom half and one shoulder looks good
  • I like 4 and 1

I agree with Lopes about the fitting of #1. #1 is still my favorite, but I think if you have it taken in a little below the bust and around the waist, it would be that much more flattering!

  • I also think Lopes is right about taking in dress number one.  Right now I like dress 2 because the belt defines your waist.  I don't think you look bad in a sweet heart neckline at all.  Big Smile

I forgot to mention this, too! I think the sweetheart neckline looks great on you and is better than the straight-across neckline. It's like I mentioned in your post a couple of days ago, v-neck looks (including sweetheart) look better on us more broad-shoulder gals, because it draws the eyes downward instead of just across our shoulders.

  • I like #1. Strapless is tricky and I think this looks modern but not trendy.
