Pregnant after a Loss

Terrified of First Ultrasound.

Hi ladies!

In May I went to my first u/s and showed that the baby had no heartbeat and had passed at 8w2d when I should have been 9w4d.

I got my BFP#2 on 12/18 and my EDD is 8/31. I went to my "pregnancy confirmation" appointment, confirming what the 20 HPT's had already confirmed. My OB wants me to do an U/S on Wednesday at 6w4d to make sure everything is progressing.

Was anyone else SO super nervous for their first ultrasound after their loss? I start shaking just thinking about it. I know I can't change anything, that it's out of my control, but it is so hard.  Do you have any tips on how to calm nerves?

Re: Terrified of First Ultrasound.

  • I must admit I get a wee bit nervous before every ultrasound. I'm always super nervous that things are going to go wrong (even though I have a doppler at home, and now I can feel baby moving around). I don't think that ever goes away. It has eased some after each ultrasound, though.

<3 T&P With you for Wednesday. I hope everything goes well.

  • Absolutely!

My BP was even up, and I couldn't sleep the night before.

You just have to try and stay calm and I know that's hard.

FX that baby is growing perfectly!

  • Oh, for sure. I was so scared I was shaking for 24 hours before. My husband reminded me that I had done everything I could and the rest was out of my hands and that helped some. I told the tech heading into the room that I had a history of loss being discovered at an u/s and she was really sweet and supportive. I somewhat disassociated before and during the u/s, though, and just focused on breathing and waiting for the time to pass.

(((Hugs))) You will get through this.

  • I understand your fear! I wasn't terrified of the first one, but I'll be terrified of the next one. We saw a heartbeat the first time around, so that didn't frighten me this time Next week's appointment will be the one that frightens me!!

  • I was super nervous! I had started spotting that morning and my u/s was in the same room as my first one had been in when I learned my LO was gone. Mine ended up being wonderful with a perfect little HB! Good luck today!

I think we're all terrified of the first ultrasound, even those with later losses. My only real advice is to take deep breaths and remind yourself of what you've already told yourself. I know it doesn't help, but I don't know of anything that really does. HUGS!

All of this. I still hold my breath during ultrasounds until we see the heartbeat....and I will be 40 weeks this weekend, with a little one that is usually kicking me during the scans! Just try to take things one step at a time, and bring your DH or someone with you to hold your hand. (((HUGS)))

  • Oh I am absolutely terrified...We went for our first u/s at 8 weeks and found no heart beat and that baby had stopped growing at 6w3.  I went this time for our confirmation appointment but my OB did not want to do an early u/s which really bummed me out.  We go on Thursday and I am assuming that I'll get to hear the heartbeat.  I'm terrified!!!   FX for you at your first u/s!!!!

  • Like others have said I think we are all scared and I am still scary right before every appointment.

I was terrified it was another ectopic as I was having some of the same weird pressure pain as last time. Turns out I was so tense I was contracting my pelvic muscles so much it caused cramping.

A lot of deep breaths and trying to focus on other things kinda helped. FX for you.
