Too much poop? TMI, but is it a problem?

We're going on a week now of DS pooping 3 to 6 times a day vs his normal 1 to 2. Is that a sign of anything? It's softer than normal, but not diahrrea. The only thing that makes me nervous is I literally just changed him and within 10 min he pooped again. It definitely smells worse than normal too. No changes in diet other than switching from whole milk to 1 per doctors, but that was a good 3 weeks ago. Normal? Call the doctor?

  • I wouldn't worry too much unless he is complaining of a tummy ache or if it was loose or watery. Could just have a mild stomach bug, which might explain the smell. Try pedialyte or gatorade to keep the electrolytes up. The BRAT diet might help. Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. I would hold off on the milk until he gets better.

  • Is each stool large or is it little bits at a time?

From my understanding, if they change a lot in their pooping habits, it could be constipation. And basically he's going just enough to get rid of the urge to go, and this keeps happening.

A call to the dr may be worth it just to see what they say.  Good Luck.

Constipation is noted by how hard the poop is, not by frequency.

I'm not trying to start an argument.  My daughter battles constipation, but her stools are not always hard, but it has been confirmed by the doctor, that even though she'll have a hard time going, the latest time being several days between stools, it wasn't hard, but huge and she had a hard time passing it.  She was backed up. I also know of a few other kiddos go little bits several times a day, not necessarily hard, but also confirmed by their doctors that it's a form of constipation - as in going enough to get past the urge to go, but still having their bowels backed up.

Again, not trying to start an argument. But was just giving the OP something else to think about.

  • That is the primary form of constipation (hard poops) but definitely not the only one.

  • I was concerned about my daughter's frequent pooping and her pedi is wonderful. He said I know her best and recommended her to the allergy department for a milk test. She wasn't allergic to milk, but the allergist said she had an intolerance. Is your LO drinking more milk, even though you switched from whole to 1%? We switched to lactose free milk and it didn't seem to make a difference. I talked with the allergist again and she said that as long as she isn't pooping 6+ times a day every day then there really isn't anything to worry about. I think I will take her to GI when she is old enough to be seen in that department at our hospital.
