Reflux mammas med question

My lo had suspected reflux from birth, so was on zantac then prilosec until our 4 month appointment. We asked our pedi if we could trial taking him off, and she said it was fine to try.
DS seemed fine at first, but then almost a month after stopping he started screaming when I would try to feed him even though he was clearly hungry. I quickly restarted zantac again and he seems to have returned to his normal distracted feeding mode.
So it seems like I stopped the medicine too soon, or that he was suffering from rebound from stopping. I am now wondering when I should try stopping again. I really have a hard time getting DS to take medicine, and I am not crazy about the fact that he has been on some form of heartburn medication since he was only a few weeks old. At the same time I don't want him to be in pain!
If your lo takes meds, when do you plan to try stopping them? Are you going to stop cold turkey or wean?

DD has been on Zantac since about 2.5 months old. She didn't like the taste at first but now she knows that a syringe means it's time to eat & several times she's actually sucked it out of the syringe. We had to increase her dose at 4 months old because she turned into a very cranky baby w/bad night sleeping (and we saw immediate improvement once she got a higher dose).
We haven't had our 6 mo appt yet but most babies out grow their reflux around 6 months old so pedi told us at 4 month appt that he won't increase the dose anymore but I'm not sure if he'll give us another refill. I have noticed that she's spitting up less. I have enough left of the prescription to continue for another month or two but I'll wait to see what pedi says at 6 mo appt.
We are on Prevacid only but on a high dosage.
We had to see a GI Specialist at Texas Childrens back in December. She wants DD to continue with her meds until February then we will cut her dosage in half. If she tolerates it well, we will discontinue the remaining meds after 2 weeks.
I would ask your pedi about a plan to wean from meds.
DD started sitting 3 weeks ago and I've noticed that her reflux has improved dramatically. She does still sleep at an incline. I'm going to discuss how we should proceed with the pedi at her 6-month appt next week (should we transition to flat sleeping or wean from meds first?).
