Running a half while pg?

Has anyone run a half marathon while pg? There is one in my town the beginning of may and its the best race! I love it and wanted to do it again. I will be 23.5 w pg, which seems like decent timing, but just looking for thoughts from other people. if you have done one pg, would you recommend? Or Not?
Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! Re: Running a half while pg?

  • I never did one that far along, but I did a half when I was first pregnant and was training for another I would have run around 13/14 weeks (it sold out before I could sign up).

My thoughts are, if you're up for it, and used to running (and it sounds like you are) then there should be no problem. Just be prepared you're going to be a lot slower (don't try for any PRs).  I did a 5k at 28 weeks and I was depressingly slow!

  • I ran a half, but I was only about 11/12 weeks pregnant.  Definitely take it easy.  I didn't struggle too much with it.  The morning sickness would come and go while I was running so sometimes I had to  'pull over' for a second and walk, but I finished decently.  I also found that fueling differently worked for me.  As I typically use sports drinks/gatorade system, etc.  I used squeezable applesauce, organic fruit ropes and raisins.  I personally stopped running around 20 weeks because of pressure while I was running, but if you are up for it check with your doctor and good luck!  I definitely don't regret it and am glad that I did it :-). Now I'm going to begin training for the same race for this year...after baby! Now I can tell my LO that he already ran a half marathon!

  • As long as your body is used to running and have run that far before pregnancy, go for it!!!

  • I ran a half at about 15 or 16 weeks this pregnancy and had no issues.  I did two triathlons in the first trimester and all of the training leading up to those and the half made me feel better during my pregnancy anyway.  I say as long as you're currently running and not adding something new, go for it.  Just make sure you let your doctor know.  My doctor was more than ok with it.

    Hey! Yup :

Thanks everyone for answering. I think I won't sign up until closer to it, but I hope to run it and plan to be super slow : I might even make my husband run with me lol

  • If you've been running consistently that type of distance before getting pregnant, I think you should be fine to continue training for the half.  I ran two half marathons while pregnant with DD and I even ran a 10k at 34 weeks and was fine.  With baby #2, I have one half marathon scheduled for January (12 weeks) and one for the end of April (25 weeks).  I'm looking forward to running them both!   Good luck!
  • I ran a half while 22 weeks pregnant.  I can't say it is the most comfortable thing I've ever done, but it wasn't miserable.  And I'm incredibly proud of it.  Ideally though, I wish I had been 18 weeks or less, that is when the long runs started to get uncomfortable.  You can read about my experience here.

Whatever you decide good luck!  I haven't really been able to run since about 26 weeks, not at all since 32.  I'm starting to go a little bit crazy!
