Mixing Two Types of Formula

Has anyone ever fed their LO's two different types of formula. My pedi doesn't want me feeding anything but neosure but our LO gets really bad gas at night. I thought about just switching out one bottle a day - the one right before he goes to bed with the gas/fussiness formula. I currently put gas drops in his evening/night time bottles and doesn't seem to do much.

 Thoughts? Anyone ever done this?

  • I haven't done this, but how early was your LO? Neosure is recommended for a reason. It has vital nutrients in it that most other formulas don't, nutrients babies miss out on when they don't get much of a third trimester.

  • At 9m actual we are currently weaning off Neosure and switching to Advance per our pediatrician's recommendation by mixing bottles.  My guys are finally on the chart for their actual age and in the 50th percentile for adjusted, and they're meeting most milestones.  Babies are gassy no matter what formula they're on so I'm not sure a different formula would truly help you.  I remember vividly praying the gassy painful days would stop!  I would definitely have a conversation with your pediatrician because they know your child's history and development while we do not.

  • I don't see a problem with trying the other formula before bed.  My DS was on breastmilk plus two bottles of enfacare per day up until a year old.  If your ped wants your LO to get the higher calorie you could always fortify the one bottle to desired calories.  We also found that adding a probiotic (we used Biogaia) helped with the gas a little bit.  Good luck

  • I'm not much help with the mixing of formula because we never did it for our LO but she did have a problem with Neosure. She was constantly gassy and the pedi kept telling us that it was just something we had to deal with because she really needed to be on Neosure. She then began vomitting and choking after every single feeding and the benefits of Neosure no longer outweighed the side effects so we had to switch to Similac Sensitive. She has been gas and vomit free since we switched in August :)

  • If your pedi wants Lo on the neosure it will probably stay that way until the drawbacks outweigh the benefits. I'm assuming they want Lo on it for the calories and preemie specific vitamins?? DD is still on neosure, but I have seen other brands with preemie specific formulas. Can't recall names right off but maybe ask the pedi about switching to one of those. If I remember the name I'll post it, just won't be going to the store anytime soon to look at them.
