Hi everybody, I'm a newbie here. My partner is about 13 weeks pregnant and we're both starting to feel like, whoa, this might really happen! (We lost twins in the summer and had been biting our nails through this entire first trimester.) Now we are set to announce the pregnancy to our families, who will probably want to lavish gifts upon us. We are very thankful to have families who share in our joy, but we'd really like to (politely) avoid the more heteronormative aspects of celebration. For instance, we'd like to be able to create a gift registry full of items that are not clearly gendered. We really like Zutano's bright colors but don't know of many other brands or stores that carry similar products.
Thanks!
Jen
Re: Gender-neutral baby clothes - where to find them?
First off congratulations! I am sorry to hear about your previous loss and wishing you a completely boring and uneventful rest of your pregnancy.
We did our registry prior to knowing the sex of our twins. What we found in stores was gender neutral wasn't hard with the big things. There area a lot of items such as pack n plays, rock n plays, swings etc that don't scream boy or girl.
Where we found difficulty was blankets, bedding, clothing, pacifiers etc. We registered for a lot of yellow or soft pastel colors in like light greens, yellows, oranges etc. We already had our nursery theme picked out so it was easy to register for what matched and not so much what gender/sex etc. I have noticed that ama.zon is better for these soft goods to keeping it neutral as there is a larger selection without things getting tired. We did a registry here as well but found no one used it as people like to actually buy things in a store and touch it. The only people who used our amaz.on were out of town family.
I will say that once we found out it was two boys, our families did start to gift us things that are very boyish for things like clothing etc (bunch of blues, football, mommy's little man etc). This didn't bother us as all. For the big things they did stick to our registry so I will say that 95% of our things we have (minus clothing) would work for either boy or girl. I don't think there is a way to totally avoid it without keeping the sex to yourself until delivery. People are coded by environment for what is boy and what is girl and will shop according to that.
Best of luck! There are a ton of options out there so it shouldn't be too hard.

I've found gender neutral things all over - with some hunting
Target, Babies R Us, Amazon and Baby GAP have all been pretty good. Our nursery will be black and white with some primary colour accents, so that feels pretty gender neutral. I've found really cute black and white, gray and white, aqua, etc babygrows. Amazon has quite a lot of gender neutral accessories and cloth diapers. Eden and Anais (sp?) does a really cool line of products that work too, some are jewel toned (more primary colours) and some are printed in a less 'pink and blue' way. We also bought a Chicco car seat in red and gray and will get a black buggy.
I will say that I've got to the point that when I see something cute and gender neutral, I buy it.
Etsy has lots of great stuff too
Old Navy does too if you just stick with their basics. American Apparel has basic onesies and stuff in lots of colourful colours (including the hard to find black and neutral shades) -- so they might be an option as well.

We lost our beautiful Twin baby girls on June 18, 2014. Tavin Sara and Casey Elizabeth were born at 21 weeks gestation and were absolutely beautiful, precious, amazing babies. We miss our daughters every day and love them with all our hearts.
On the cheaper side, Old Navy does some cute things. On the expensive side there is an organic brand call Tea that makes really adorable clothes that are mostly gender-neutral. We've gotten a few of them as gifts or hand-me-downs and they are really soft and lovely.
Since we have boy/girl twins and the boy is slightly larger, I try to save at consignment stores by buying things that he can wear first and then pass on to her. At least in this area it seems that most of the gender-neutral stuff ends up on the boy racks, so I always start there.
Hanna Andersen has some cute, neutral clothes. A little on the pricey side. Most stores offer something, just not usually a whole lot.
Carters has a decent selection.
And there is HandsomeInPink.com. I do not know their quality and they are not a company you would buy tons of stuff from but I figured you might like their mission.
I am going to lurk on this post to see what anyone comes up with because I do not have a baby but my son does not follow gender norms and lately I have been doing all our shopping at HM.
I usually buy clothing that are gender neutral from small labels on Etsy , because if I have another baby I don't want to have to go buy whole new wardrobe. Plus I hate princess stuff.
There are a few shops but I've only bought once L"Enfant Terrible (https://www.etsy.com/shop/LEnfantTerribleShop?ref=si_shop). Prices a little higher than Gymboree but styles are hip, well made and my DD one photographs really "hip" in there clothes. I love their gender neutral hoody and harem pants. I also buy my Nicoletta plain tops from H&M boys dept. and dress her up in skinny jeans and pigtails and converse sneakers.
