Sick baby

I get to stay home from church with a sick baby. Some kind of respiratory thing. He's currently playing on the floor and just wiped his snotty nose on my pajama pants. I guess since he can't say, "Mom, I need a tissue"...

For the most part he seems to feel okay except when eating (too stuffed up) and sleeping (too much coughing to sleep deeply).

Who else has had a sick baby so far?

Re: Sick baby

  • Awww! I'm sorry to hear that! This is actually the first time in a VERY long time that Micah isn't that sick. He still has a never ending runny nose, but since I went back to work in September, he's been almost non-stop sick with everything imaginable. He did have one time where he was too stuffed up to eat or take a pacifier. That was torture for everyone!

I hope he feel better soon!

  • My DD is sick too although like the other poster that is the norm around here ever since she started daycare back at the end of August. She too likes to wipe her snots on me.. Haha. Luckily even with the congestion she is eating and sleeping ok.

  • Sorry your little guy is sick. We've been fighting bronciolitis for nearly two months now. He's also had three ear infections and one stomach bug. My poor kiddo can't catch a break. It sucks so much to see a little baby sick.

  • LO is sick now, too. He has had a cold and cough for 2 weeks and gave it to us, but now is on the tail end of a stomach bug added to it. The sleeping is better because the cold isn't as bad now... But the food thing worries me because he has always been one to eat every bite and I can barely get him to eat. Anybody have any feeding tricks for a sick baby?

  • Blake had pneumonia in November, and just recently RSV.   We were hospitalized in Nov for 3 days, and again for 3 days with the RSV.  This poor kid.  He's so good natured though that even in the hospital, and when he's not feeling good - he is still happy.  No tips for getting sick baby to eat, my 98 percentile baby hasn't lost his appetite through all that!  I just can't wait until winter is over so we can stop dealing with all this!!

I am glad DS isn't in daycare because I know he'd be getting sick a lot more. When DD started daycare at 2, she was sick every 10 days or so for 3 months.

Will he still take a bottle? You might try pedialyte or something like that to make sure he's not getting dehydrated.

DS hasn't been overly interested in eating today; he'll take a bottle, but is eating slowly because he's so congested.

Fortunately, he doesn't have a fever, because he's got tons of chest congestion and I am worried about it turning into something worse. He already has an inhaler, so that's helped some, but I'm not sure if being at risk for asthma makes him more at risk for this developing into something worse.

  • Lolabelle- KatFCo's ideas for pedialyte is a good idea- doc also had us water down J's formula so it wasn't so thick-it can make him more congested (just add an extra ounce of water or plain pedialyte to it).

KatFCo- we ended up putting Joshua back in his RNP or swing for sleeping since he was so congested.  We had RSV at Thanksgiving and came down with HiB (the one you vaccinate for-there is a "wild strain" that the vaccine doesn't cover) and he ended up with double eye and ear infections.  Because of the RSV, we have an inhaler too, and it seemed to help this time as well.

Good luck and I hope everyone feels better soon!!!

Yes Micah just recently graduated back into his crib last week after spending almost a month in his RNP. He could only sleep in there or in our arms, because coughing woke him up so often. I need to look into the weight limits on it, but that was by far the best investment we've ever made.

ETA: Max weight is 25 pounds. Our <18lb kid will last awhile, but I know a lot of other babies are heavier.

ETA2: I guess we are still breaking the rules. "Developmental Guidelines: Use only with a child unable to sit up unassisted or grasp side of seat and pull upward."

Micah can definitely sit unassisted, but he never tries to pull himself out of the seat. We belt him in now (didn't when he was tiny). I guess we'll have to graduate out of it sooner than later. Boo.

Thanks for askingthe doc recommended pedialyte and LO drank it on day one, but has refused it ever since. I managed it in a medicine dropper on day 2it took foreverbut nothing since. He atill nurses like normal, so he is getting nutrition, just no solids. Thankfully, he was a little better today and took about 1/3 of the pure that he usually eats...hoping he's back to normal very soon!?!

  • We had a pukey baby all weekend.  Started sometime overnight Friday/Saturday.  I went in to get him Saturday morning and he was laying in a pile of puke.  I felt horrible!  Pretty much puked up everything we gave him all day Saturday and yesterday.  Oh and then of course, diarrhea as well.  Hanging out at home with daddy today.

Oh, poor baby! That's so much worse than a cough. Make sure he gets pedialyte or something to keep him from getting dehydrated. I hope he feels better soon and you guys don't end up getting it.

We already have his mattress elevated; he's never had a RNP and we sold his swing when he grew out of it, but the mattress seems to help.

I took him in to the dr today and they saw a slight ear infection and he was wheezing a ton. They gave him a breathing treatment and we already have albuterol for him so we're going to try that and hope it gets better.

I see an asthma diagnosis in our future.

    YesYesYes

He puked up the pedilyte as well.  We were trying to be careful and only give him a few oz at a time.  He'd be fine for a few hours and then blaaaah all over everything.  I did about 4 loads of laundry yesterday.  I was sick too, but I don't think we had the same thing.   I did decide to call the pedi last night.  She wasn't overly concerned and said we were doing the right stuff for him.  If he was still sick today, we were going to bring him in.  Checked with DH a few times today and no puke, so I think we're on the mend.  Thank goodness!  Having a sick baby is soooo nerve wracking!
