Water & Juice

My DH is sooooooo persistant on trying to give DS water, this is all his dad's fault who from the beginning said LO needs water and has been harping on DH's case ever since.  NO he doesn't....I read BM provides all the water he needs up to age one. I hate when the IL's act like they know everything....they tried to give DS solids when he was only 4 1/2 moths old....I nipped that in the butt quickly.  Now they are planting seeds in DH's head about water!!  Grrrrrr.....mind your own bees wax!

I tried to compromise by telling him if he wants to give water 1 time a day when he eats solids to mix it with a tad of juice so it's not just wasting space in his tummy.  At least the juice has some nutrition!  He doesn't want to compromise and wants to only give plain water. I did tons of research and everything I read says if you BF and LO has enough wet diapers then he/she doesn't need the extra water.  What do you girls think?

Re: Water & Juice

  • I ebf and the pedi said that we could give water as a complimentary beverage with his solids (at meals)...but still bf regularly (as we would)... Therefore, we have given a tiny bit of water in a sippy just at meals so he could practice drinking out of a cup. We haven't given juice.

This exactly. DS only gets like 2oz of water a day at the very, very most.

This, but I had to give DD some prune juice for the past week. She got really constipated. Now she gets water with her meals (in a sippy) and 2 oz of juice mixed w. water (in a regular cup).

  • I have a hard enough time getting DD to drink enough formula I am too afraid to even try water!

My Dr tells every visit, BM or Formula until age one. But I hear you about people pushing the water. My mom is on me all the time to give her water and juice. It makes me crazy. She also had the brilliant idea to try and give DD cake with nuts in it over Christmas. Ugh

  • A little bit of water with meals is fine. You actually have to be careful you aren't giving too much water. It can drop a baby's sodium level and cause seizures.

  • Glad I'm not alone in this.  I hope DH comes around to only 1 time/day...he acts like DS is dehydrated or something! lol DS gets plenty of BM...he nurses 6-8 times a day sometimes more when he's being clingy...he's a little piggy with BM.
  • I am also bf but i give my 6.5 month old son water about 3 times during the day..

initially, i was very very against it as doc kept saying BM gives all the water needed by the baby;s body. My IL however were not okay with the doc's advice. But , when i offered my son water at about 4.5 months, very little - he was very very happy drinking it....and everytime i gave it, he was showing the same happiness..then some of my friends pointed out how human bodies need just plain water - as a very very basic thing....similarly babies, jst plain water - not juice, not BM...plus my son started solids quite early...so i decided to offer him water once a day and then progressively now to 3 ( after each of his meal) - i offer him 1 ounce everytime..he spills some, drinks some...direct from a cup...

this has no impact on the amount of milk he takes from me...

i don't know if this is right or not...but it makes his bowel movement good and makes him happy ...so i stick with this ..

This. I BF, and DD is eating solids twice a day. After her dinner of solids, I'll let her take a few sips of water from a plastic cup. She mainly likes to chew on it, but she will take a few small swallows. We aren't planning on doing juice at all, at least not until she's a toddler.

  • We give a small amount of water (no juice) in a sippy when we do solids. I don't force him to drink it but it really helps him to get use to the sippy cup and learn to drink from it which is super helpful once you transition baby to whole milk. I did this with both my other boys.

Personally I do not mix any juice in. Juice does not have nutrition value and water is much better then juice/water if you are going to give something.

This for us, too. A couple oz of water in a sippy to practice, but no juice for as long as possible.

  • I think juice before 1 is associated w a higher risk of obesity.   ( it is much more nutritious to eat a piece of fruit instead.) so I'd give a tiny amount of water at meal times, but definitely not juice.
