Has anyone out there given birth at the new hospital on Fort Belvoir? I am looking to find out about your birth experiences...
How was the staff?
How was the room?
What should I be prepared for?
What things do I need to pack and what things do they give me and baby?
Do I get any of the special stuff other hospitals offer (EX: massage, dinner)?
Is there anything I else you think I should know?
Thanks ladies!
Re: Given birth at Ft. Belvoir?
I had my son there in October.
The staff was good, just depends on the nurse you have. Mine were amazingly helpful when I had trouble with LO's latch. They have a lactation consultant on staff but she isn't there all the time. I only saw her once for about ten minutes and she wasn't particularly helpful. Also, I'm guessing you know this if you get your prenatal care at the women's clinic at Belvoir, but barring any complications you'll most likely deliver with a midwife.
You'll have a private room for both l&d and in the mother baby ward. The rooms are very nice, big TVs and bathrooms and everything is brand new.
Be prepared to do most of the baby care yourself- the nurses don't do much. I don't even think they did one diaper change for my LO. They don't have a nursery either so you'll room in with your baby.
Pack the usual stuff for yourself- clothes, shampoo etc. My room had a breast pump, but I know they don't have enough for every room so you should bring yours if you're planning on breastfeeding. For baby, they have pretty much everything you'll need for the first few days. I brought my own clothes for him because they were cuter. They don't have pacifiers so bring your own if you plan on using them.
I don't know how Ft. Belvoir stacks up against other hospitals but I was happy with the amenities. As for food, there's a lot to choose from on their menu and it's pretty good. They don't have wi-fi which sucks, but the TVs have basic cable and a bunch of on-demand movies to choose from.
Make sure your baby's stats are correct- They measured my LO wrong and the length was off by over an inch, and his birth time was off by over 10 minutes.
Good luck!
