So the cosmetics post yesterday got me thinking about my makeup. No one ever "taught" me how to do my makeup, I just started doing it. So I don't really know if I'm doing it right. In fact, I'm pretty sure I do eyeshadow completely wrong. And my foundation/powder always looks too dark for my face even though I buy the lightest shade from Neutrogena. Since I don't know what I'm doing I stick to really neutral shades but I would like to learn how to do makeup and have more fun with it. I've always wanted to buy makeup at Sephora but I'm totally intimidated. Right now I buy everything at the grocery store makeup aisle.
So, any ideas where I could get a "makeover" that's not super expensive but where they could also teach me how to make up my face? TIA!
Re: Makeup (NBR)
The Sephora girls will totally do it for free. I used to work at Sephora and we would jump at the chance to do a makeover. Especially if it was slow hours.
MAC does a teaching session but its $100 and you get no take home product.
The reason why your shade isnt matching is because market brands dont do well on olive and yellow skin tones. They are great for pink undertones.
You can get a cheaper foundation at Sephora for $22. I use their mineral one. And I've worn every foundation under the sun. Its like crack. seriously. I would also go powder instead of liquid because those are quickest to apply and the most fool proof. Apply with a fluffy brush instead of a sponge and it blends much better.
Good Luck! Wish I could help you shop!
*Editing to add, invest in a brush set. Doesnt have to be really expensive. The brushes make the biggest difference in application. *

Even a minor event in the life of a child is an event of that child's world and thus a world event.
Oh man I wish you could help me too! Just the thought of going in there is making my stomach turn, ha I'm such a wuss!
I've also got to convince MH that I should do it. He already balks at what I spend on makeup as it is.
Edit: should I go in there with the makeup on that I normally wear or should I go fresh-faced?
One more tip... Go in with a clean, moisturized face. Then look for the girl who's face looks like what you would want. If they are wearing crazy eyeshadow, chances are that is how you will leave. Then just say you really want a new foundation and need help with a good match. They will take it from there. Also, Sephora is really big on their customer service. They HAVE to give you samples and get secret shopped all the time, so they are on their toes with customer service. Dont be scared to ask for samples. Also you can return anything even if its half gone. They are like Nordstrom I swear.

I love you! Let me know if you think of anything else
This is helping me feel more confident about going, for sure.
There's a small-ish Sephora in a JCPenny that's close to me. Would that be just as good or should I go to a big one that stands alone?

I second Sephora but I've actually had good luck with Ulta in the past year. If you go to one with a Benefit counter they tend to be better, IME.
I'm great with makeup but my mom isn't so much. She likes it but she is messy with it. We went to Sephora early on a random Saturday right at opening and asked for help choosing a new foundation and eyeshadow pallete for her. They were so incredibly nice to her and gave her a great tutorial on using the palette. They picked great products for her. She's now obsessed!
The other trick is using good brushes, particularly on your eyes. Crappy brushes just don't work as well, which was half of my mom's problem.
Google "MakeupbyTiffanyD" She has a YouTube channel and Blog. She's great...she has some crazy eye looks but also some very simple ones and uses a mix of better and drugstore brands. Her videos walk you through every single step.
For eyes, blending is one of the most important steps and lots of people don't do it. TiffanyD will show you!
This whole thread is making me twitchy nervous.
I wish I felt okay about makeup.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who is makeup-challenged
There is hope for us all!
I can't even wrap my head around how much makeup she has! I watched her makeup organization video and omg how can he possibly even use all of that! But anyway, she does good tutorials so thanks for the info.
