change spelling of the name?

So my husband and I have been set on our LO's name pretty much since day one, Camilla Grace. We love it! I hadn't ever given much thought to spelling, I just always wrote it out as typed above. Well, today something occurred to me that gave me a bit of a freak out. My in laws are hispanic, and the younger members of the family speak english predominantly, but my mil, fil, dh's gma/gpa, aunts and uncles all speak pretty much just spanish. in spanish, the double L makes the sound of a Y and as stupid as it seems i would be pretty irked if some of the in laws saw her name written down and said "cah-ME-ah".

The only other way I've ever seen the name spelled is Camila and I actually like the way it looks and it would avoid any bilingual mispronunciation.  Does it seem dumb to change the spelling this late in the game? Does it look funny to you?

Re: change spelling of the name?

  • That is a really pretty name. And IMO, it still sounds pretty said with the accent. They will be the only people in her life calling her that and when she gets older she may appreciate the different spin on her name as it comes from people that care for her. I also have two ll's in my name and my Spanish side seems to get it right, for the most part.

However, no, I definitely don't think it's too late to change to whatever you like.

ITA.  Honestly, if they're going to pronounce it with Spanish accent, they're still not going to pronounce Camila as cuh-mil-uh (which I assume is the way you're pronouncing it?).  They would pronounce the i as an ee sound anyway, wouldn't they?

I think Camilla is such a beautiful name, I really wouldn't worry about it and just remind yourself that they're not doing it on purpose.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Camila or Camilla is a very known name for spanish people. So even if they read it with a double L they will still know it's pronounced Camila. Besides it's all about the way you say it. They will just repeat after you and it wont make a difference.

I also had a similar issue, my family is Brazilian and my husband's from Argentina, and we live in America, so it was hard to find a name that everybody would pronounce the same and wouldn't sound weird in any language. So we are going with Mia, It's cute, everybody loved it and is (thank God) saying it the same way lol

I wouldn't worry about Camilla though.... There is a bigger chance they will mispronounce Grace than Camilla.

haha this is so true! its super uncommon for them (mexicans, anyway) to use grace as a name and when we told my MIL she didnt quite get it! thats so funny you said that! idc though, it wont be used by anyone other than us really.

and thanks for the responses. when we tell them the name they always pronounce the L sound and it sounds super super pretty but for a second it almost came out wrong when someone saw it written down. the more i've over thought it, the more the single L spelling has grown on me, i think its sticking. plus ive noticed even when DH and I have talked about single vs double L he's always said it didnt matter but he has a tendency to automatically use the single L if he writes it out

  • I had to LOL at this because I am going through the same thing! We are naming LO Daniella and everyone kept assuming we were going to spell it with one L. Both mine and DH's family are Cuban, but they all speak fluent English. My mom was very concerned that people would pronounce her name Dani-eya when I told her the spelling.  I was worried for a minute but DH was pretty quick to convince me that that was the dumbest thing he had ever heard lol. Then he reminded me that my mom never considered the silent "h" when she decided to name me Ashley lol!
