Anyone's LO on Singulair?

My pedi gave us an Rx for 4mg Singulair Oral Granules a few days before Christmas for D to start taking daily. I haven't gotten it filled yet and after reading some of the side effects I'm a little freaked out. As an asthma/allergy sufferer myself I have taken Singulair but I was much older than D when I took it.

Anyone have their LO on this med?  Any bad effects?

Re: Anyone's LO on Singulair?

  • D has had so many ear infections, has a constant runny nose, and has had pneumonia twice because of the congestion asthma. Anytime he gets congested he will start wheezing so we break out the nebulizer. We have been doing benedryl zyrtec but it doesnt seem to help except temporarily.

What exactly did the dr. prescribe it for?nbsp; I'm just surprised...ds had major skin and allergy issues, and we had him on atarax, zyrtec, and then claritin and benedryl for any allergy flareups.nbsp; I have major allergies and my dr. ok'd many of my medications when I was pregnant but specifically mentioned to avoid taking singulair if I could.nbsp; So with a bunch of other approved for kid allergy meds out there, I'm just wondering why your dr. prescribed singulair, and I'd try to look into other options first.

This is odd to me, because I was told the exact opposite! They wanted me on singular while pg... Weird!

Me too. I take it for asthma and stayed on it my entire pregnancy. It is a category B medication which is very safe in pregnancy so I don't know why they didn't want you on it. I don't have any experience with it in kids though.

  • Singular is specifically for over production of mucous. it's not an antihistamine like Zyrtec, Claritin or others. I only have experience with it in the vet field but just thought I would throw that out there. it sounds appropriate for your DS given his symptoms.

  • R has been on Singulair since he was about 8 months old.  The only side effect that I noticed was it making him a bit drowsy when I would give it to him at supper.  The easiest ways to give the oral granules are to either put it on top of apple sauce or another puree and feed it in a spoon, or dissolve it into a teaspoon of milk and feed it by dropper.

So there's this boy. He kinda stole my heart. He calls me "Mom"
