Food Allergy

help please- I'm going crazy! (MPSI??)

I need help.  My DD is 6 mo old and EBF but since about 6 week, we have been dealing with green stools with mucus.  After a lot of pushing and finding a spot of blood in her stool at 4 mo, I finally got the pediatrician to take me seriously.  He told me it was Milk/Soy protein intolerance and to remove from diet. At that point she was having green stools every diaper, with a lot of mucus and was very fussy.  After removing all trace milk and soy for 3 weeks, I saw little improvement so desperate, I removed gluten, corn, nuts, and eggs.  I saw a dramatic improvement after a couple of weeks - more yellow diapers and HUGE improvement in mood- little fuss and very happy baby.  Then after about 3 weeks of being top 8 free - I found a little blood again.  I cut back to brown rice, chicken, fruits and veg (only olive oil and salt seasoning) and it got better for 2 weeks and now I am seeing more green diapers and tiny streaks of blood intermittently - though her mood still is very good and happy. (doesn't fuss with stools like she used to) I feel like I am going crazy.  I am analyzing every speck of food that I am eating, and inspecting every diaper.  I amt exhausted and don't know what to do or who else to ask.  We've seen an allergist - she has no allergies.  Pediatrician is not supportive of continuing to BF but I am not convinced she will get better with formula.  Plus, I need to start introducing solids but because I dont know what is bothering her, I am afraid of what her reaction might be.  I dont know what else to do.  ANyone have any suggestions or tips??  Her growth has been excellent - she's in the 90%and up so no other symptoms besides the stools. I dont want to stop BF but I don't want her to be uncomfortable either.  She also is teething - could that contribute to the return of symptoms??  help!

  • I think you should see a pediatric GI and discuss her symptoms and bring along her chart. Your diet seems very restrictive. Are you also seeing a nutritionist?

  • You could have more allergy testing done, but if your LO has intolerances, the allergy tests will be negative. DD2 is MSPI, but tests negative for allergies to dairy and soy because she does not have a true allergy to them. She did test positive for cashews though. Also, allergy testing is not very accurate in babies. The younger they are, the less accurate the results are.

All that aside...do you have an oversupply? If LO is getting too much foremilk, that can mimic MSPI symptoms. I'm wondering if your supply dipped when you went Top 8 free, and that's why her symptoms improved. Then maybe she had a growth spurt, and your supply went back up and her symptoms came back...?

Going back to your diet...are you taking any vitamins or supplements? They often contain dairy/soy/gluten. And ditto pp's about seeing a dietitian to make sure you're getting the nutrients/calories you need.

  • I could have written your exact post when my LO was the same age.  He is now turning one and we are still having issues.  Our pedi stopped being overly supportive of BFing and encouraged us to try Alimentum.  I made it to 9.5 mos. BFing dairy and soy free but we had run out of options and specialists to see, and I couldn't fight the fight anymore.  We weaned to Elecare, and are still having issues (it hasn't been a cure-all for us!) but he is about 50% better than when breastfed.

I think we are dealing with another protein intolerance that we haven't figured out yet (corn maybe?) besides just the MSPI.  The GI has sort of brushed us off now because the blood in his stools is seldom now and he is gaining weight.  My LO seems to react to EVERYTHING (including amoxicillin, dye-free Motrin, organic MSPI-safe cheerios, etc.) except a few kinds of plain steamed veggies and fruits.

With that said, if you haven't seen a GI specialist yet, do that next!

  • Thanks ladies.  We are doing much better today.  I still can't nail down exactly what it is but since her mood is SO much better and she continues to grow and gain weight well.  I am watching her closely and very slowly adding food back to my diet.  We just started solids this week - and again, am adding one thing at a time and watching her closely.  Just today - we had a "bad" diaper - neon green color and some fussing.  I'm still strictly milk, soy, egg, corn and gluten free.  I just added GF oatmeal back in.  I can't imagine she is reacting to that but it seems like there might be a pattern to it?

I'm trying to stict to it - since I have heard many stories of LO not getting better after switching to formula.

  • And my pediatrician tells me that seeing a pediatric GI specialist wouldnt help - because the first thing he/she would want is to put her on formula.
