Nipple Shield Question

My DD is about 36 weeks and we have been home now for a week. She does amazing with breastfeeding and latches well with the nipple shield. Now that we are home I have been trying her without the shield and she really struggles. Has anyone successfully weaned from the nipple shield and how did you do it? I do not want to rush her because we have been successful so far but I would like to get to a point when we don't need it.

Thanks!

Re: Nipple Shield Question

  • We needed a ns at first. I want to say he stopped using it around his due date??? I can't remember but we were trying for a week or two off and on and one day he was impatient while I was trying to get it from the nightstand and just latched on. Never used it again. Sometimes it takes a while. See it you can hand express a tiny bit so LO knows what's going on and doesn't have to wait long. That might help!!

  • We also stopped using a shield around her due date. Every couple days I would try without it and once it worked we never went back! Good luck, breastfeeding becomes so much easier without it!

  • Glad to hear she is BFing well - that is awesome at 36 weeks GA!  I used nipple shields with my twins.  The NICU LC told us they should be able to wean off of them by the time they were 40 weeks GA.  Well... they weren't quite ready by that point but slowly and surely they eventually came off of them by about 6 weeks adjusted. I just followed their cues and attempted trying without the shields until they could finally do it.  It's definitely doable but you are right not to rush her especially still being so young. Good luck and I hope it goes smoothly for you. Don't get discouraged.
