Anyone else using their diaper bag for their hospital bag?

I realized a couple weeks ago that I don't have any luggage. No suitcases, no duffle bags. I did get a fairly roomy (and pretty) diaper bag for Christmas, though, and I think I'll just stuff that for the hospital instead of bothering with finding a duffle bag or something. If I bring my own pillow, I'll just carry it separately.

Thoughts?

  • Personally I would use it as an excuse to buy myself an overnight bag. Oh wait, I did that anyway.

My diaper bags are no where near big enough for me to use for myself and the baby. I would need like 6 of them. But if it works for you, go for it.

  • Im probably going to bring more things than would just fit in a diaper bag.  Do you have a backpack at all? perhaps you could use a diaper bag and backpack.

  • I am planning on packing very light this time around so I'm hoping that I could fit everything in a large diaper bag or something similar.  Just plan to bring something (like a big shopping bag or something) to pack up any gifts people might bring to you while you're in the hospital as well as anything the hospital sends home with you (diapers, creams, etc)

  • Yup, my diaper bag is also my hospital bag.  It's a repurposed gym/knitting bag too, since the last thing I need is another bag-shaped object!  I barely use the ones I have.

    This ;)

I have one piece of luggage, but I don't want to roll in with a suitcase. I have an old duffel bag that displays the name of my old company that's just navy and nothing special. This is my first "planned" hospital birth, and I felt like total garbage with DS because I didn't have any of my own things. EXH had to run home several times to get me some stuff, and then we carried it out in a trash bag.

Definitely looking into a cute but economical bag to take.

  • It may work.  I tend to pack a lot of stuff I don't need so there's no way it would work for me!  You can get a duffle bag for pretty cheap at Target.

  • I have two bags... diaper bag with baby's stuff and smaller items. And a small weekend bag for myself with my stuff (clothes, bath items, electronics). DH has a change of clothes in my bag even though he won't be staying the night.

This is what I did last time too. No way could I get everything in just the diaper bag, but mine is on the smaller side so maybe you could if it's a big one?

  • My diaper bag just has everything for the baby in it and its so full. I have a small rolling suitcase carry on size for my stuff.

  • My diaper bag is roomy but not enough for my and LO's stuff together. I'm using my gym bag for my things.
  • I have a large utility tote from 31 that I adore.  It's big enough so that DH and I can both pack in it, so that's what we'll use.  If we need additional space, then I'll pack the diaper bag because I just got a shiny new one :)
  • I've already packed the diaper bag with baby's stuff.  Add in a few extra blankets for the trip home and it's full.

Sadly, this time, we have 4 bags - one for me/DH, one with DD's stuff if she needs to spend the night with family, one for DD's toys/food for the waiting game at the hospital, and one for the baby.  Granted, they're all pretty small bags.

If you can't buy one, use that pillow!  In college,  I would always fit a ton of stuff in the pillowcase so I didn't have to pack much for a weekend at home.

  • You will be coming home with more than you arrived with (and not just the baby). If you can fit what you need in there, do that and then throw it in a laundry bag (along with pillow or anything else you are bringing. When you come home, you can carry the bag separate and put everything else in the basket.

Ditto all of that!  I can't imagine not even having a duffle bag -- what do you do if you go somewhere overnight!?

Target has some great deals on luggage -- I'd go buy a small zipper "flght attendent" bag to use, and that way you have it for future needs as well.

  • Yes, I plan on using my diaper bag as my hospital bag. It's really large, like an oversized purse. All I packed was a couple pairs of yoga pants and stretchy shirts, nursing bras/tanks & underwear (that I don't mind getting ruined) I plan on taking full advantage of anything/everything the hospital supplies-mesh undies, hospital gown, pads, etc. I packed 2 sizes of outfits for LO and everything fit just fine. My fiance got his own diaper bag since mine was too girly for him & if I need I can throw my other things into that.

  • We got two diaper bags for our shower so I'm using both of them and my MIL lent me one of her Vera Bradley over night duffles. I'll carry my pillow and the boppy with me.

  • I'm a chronic over packer, so there's no way I could share a diaper bag with LO! ;)  I have the diaper bag packed with stuff for LO (1-2 onesies, couple of sleepers in different sizes, couple of CDs, one blanket).  It's still about half empty, I wanted to leave space to put some hospital goodies. ;)  My bag is a rolling one that also has straps you could carry over the shoulder.  I use it for all of my traveling and love it.  So far all it has is two pairs of comfy pants, nursing bra, nursing tank, robe + a good sized bag of snacks (paleo kits of beef jerky, grain free bars, etc).  I'll probably add a pair of undies to go home (though I'm hoping to score some mesh ones!) and some socks/old slippers.  Then I'm planning to add DH's stuff to my bag (shorts, shirts, clean undies).  It should still have some room.  I'm also going to bring 1-2 reusable grocery bags for gifts and hospital supplies.  I've got a list of what to look out for. ;)
