I'm a PW today. Help me choose a remodeling plan

We have two bedrooms and one bathroom. One of the bedrooms is very very small but connected to a large bathroom (there's a 2nd entrance so you can enter the bathroom through that room, or from another part of the house). The other bedroom is bigger and not connected.

Right now DH and I have the larger bedroom and E has the tiny one connected to the large bath. DH and I are thinking about moving into the tiny bedroom and making it into a small master suite with the attached bath, and changing our huge laundry room on the other side of the house into a guest/kids bathroom. We would then close off the 2nd entrance to what would then be the master bath.

Would you prefer to have a tiny bedroom with your bathroom attached, or a larger bedroom with your bathroom (and visitors bathroom) on the other side of the house?

Re: I'm a PW today. Help me choose a remodeling plan

  • We contemplated doing this in our house. We have a small bath on the opposite side of the house from the master. Gator's room is across from the bath. Our house is also 2bd, 1bth. We were thinking of knocking out the wall that is between the laundry and bathroom, turning it into one huge bath. Or we were thinking of combining Gator's room and the laundry room, stacking the washer and dryer in the back corner of the laundry room...where there is a cubby and they would fit perfectly. Then turn the rest of the laundry into a master bath. Then swapping rooms with Gator.

Right now, we are already in the smaller room, but it is only a foot smaller on one side and a little over a foot smaller on the other. We did a whole house reno and full kitchen remodel in my 3rd Tri. We ended up not touching the bathroom. We are just going to reno it and not switch things around.

We made the choice based on the fact that we are eventually going to turn it into a rental. Although having another bath would bring more money in, the back door goes through the laundry room and is an awesome mud room. We felt like giving up that space, coming in the front door would be cluttered with shoes and everything else. And I like Gator having the bigger room, as she likes to play in there. It rains like 9mo out of the year here so playing outside isn't an option most of the time. Her room isn't huge, as our house is only 900sq ft, but it is big enough that there is a lot of play space. And we are hardly ever in our room, so don't need a bigger room.

  • I forgot to add that we also based it on the fact that we don't have overnight visitors....like ever. If they stay, they stay in the shop apartment at our IL's who live next to us. So almost 100 of the time, it is either me, SO or Gator in the bathroom. I don't feel we need to bathrooms for just us three. If we had visitors a lot, I would probably want to have a separate bath.....just in case I had to poo if company was over. Ha!

  • When your kids are older it is nice to have an attached bathroom.  I would go for the smaller bedroom.

We are a family with IBS. We like private bathrooms. I'd also like the close bathroom for when I have to get up to pee at night.

I'm not too concerned with the size of my bedroom since I only use it when I'm sleeping. As long as our queen sized bed fits, we'll make due. E, however, needs space to play.

  • You all are echoing my thoughts. I think we'll switch to the smaller room and have our own private bath. I think it's worth it and you're right, E will want to play in her room more and more as she grows up. Thanks so much!
