Security camera instead of baby monitor?

I've heard of people using a security camera instead of a baby monitor -- it's cheaper and then you can view on the internet, too; and then can be used after you no longer need a baby monitor.

We're about to buy a baby monitor for my mom for when she watches our son and thought that this would be perfect, so that I can see him when I miss him!

Has anyone used this?  Thoughts?

Re: Security camera instead of baby monitor?

  • This is something we were considering as well since we could use our phones to view the baby.

What I particularly like about having a portable monitor is being able to take it with me to other places or transporting it to different rooms. Also, some monitors offer features that allow you to play music when you are not in the same room or if the baby wakes up.

  • We have the iBaby monitor that works on our iphones and iPads.  We leave an iPad for the babysitter to look at when we go out.

  • We bought the Drop cam. Baby isn't hear yet, but i've been testing it on our dogs.

I like it! It look less than 5 minutes to set up.  We can check it on on iPhones, I pad or computer..  I like that DH and I each have our own monitor and it can be checked remotely.

It also has a talk feature.  We actually got the motorola for our baby shower, but returned it for this.  I think the pluses out weight those of the motorola.

  • We use one and love it. Ours is a Foscam and we use apps on our iPhone to see it. We can just use the IP address on our iPads to see him. And you have to be on our network to see it, so we feel good from a security standpoint.

  • We are getting a dropcam instead of a video monitor.  My H loves gadgety stuff, so he was in charge of researching and selecting a monitor.  He said that it got great reviews.  I like that we can both watch it on our phones.

  • The thing that made me want to go with a conventional baby monitor system is the fact that the image and sound is instantly accessible and available all the time, no fiddling with computer programs, setting or phone apps. Helps when the baby starts to fuss at night and you're too groggy to fumble with gadgets to see what's going on.
