Cloth Diapering

Start with disposables and switch to cloth?

I'm pregnant with twin boys and they will more than likely come early which will mean they are to small for the one size fit all.

I've looked into both rumparooz lil joey, fuzzibuns xs. Both are supposed to fit 4lb babies.  We aren't interested in doing prefolds.

What are everyone's suggestions? Should we start with disposable and switch to cloth or are the xs cloth diapers worth the investment?

Re: Start with disposables and switch to cloth?

  • I used almost all of the disposables that we got at our shower, then made the switch to cloth. I would say it's really a personal preference. Kawaii pure and naturals are really inexpensive, and people here seen to love them. They say they fit 6 to 20 something lbs which is a good length of time to use a nb stash. FWIW, I had pockets and prefolds and ended up using my prefolds more because the laundry was easier, and I had less leaks. HTH!

  • The great thing about newborn diapers is that since they are used for such a short time they often stay in great condition and hold their resale value. Many people will recommend buying your newborn stash used to save money and you will be able to resell them for close to what you paid for them. Even if you don't want to buy used you can still resell them when your done. My little girl was quite small at only 5lbs 4oz and I wish I had known she'd be so small so I would have gotten more tiny diapers. I only have 4 lil joeys which of our nb stash are the only diapers I could get to fit under her stump so sadly we're using disposables until it falls off. I think that lil joeys should fit twins at birth as they are quite tiny. To give you an idea of resell, I've been looking at diaperswappers.com to buy some more and they sell used for 10-12 dollars generally compared to the 2/30$ or $15 a piece they sell for new.

  • Given that newborns go through ~12-15 diapers per day, XS/NB diapers are even more worth it if you're expecting your babies to be on the smaller side.

With twins, you'd probably want to wash every day or day and a half, so you'll need about 4 dozen diapers. If you buy used at $10 each, that's $480. With small babies they will probably fit for 3 months. Three months of disposables for twins will likely cost about the same or a little more, but you can sell the cloth diapers for $480, essentially diapering for free.

I don't have twins, but if I did I would absolutely use cloth from the beginning. Not only for the cost savings, but also for not having to leave the house with 2 babies when I ran out of diapers!

  • We used sposies until the cord fell off at about a week, and then we switched to prefolds.  We had a couple of xs FB and they fit our tiny girl, so I would think those would work for you.  I know you said you're not interested in prefolds, but I will say that after using many types of diapers, they're my favorite and we switched from using mostly pockets to exclusively prefolds.

  • Looking into a gently used stash is a great suggestion. Do you have a cd store nearby? Ours does resale so it may be a good idea to call and see what they can do.

  • alva baby makes a nice line of newborn cloth and they're affordable. They come in nice colours and are available in either snaps or velcro.

  • You can also look into a nb cloth rental much cheaper than buying a full stash. Kissed by the moon has one, you could get some FBs and some LJ. I loved both of those for our little guy.

As the pp said, Alva also has a great nb diaper, but I don't think my LO fit into his until he was close to 10 lbs. He is still wearing them at 14 lbs though and there is still plenty of room. They are a good cheap option for that transition time when one size are really bulky but your babies have outgrown the nb dipes.

  • I haven't CD'ed a NB before, but I'm planning to this time around. NB diapers are said to have a great resale value, so even if you buy new you should be able to recoup some cost. I've seen a few mentions of Happy Heiny's micro mini diapers for preemies or super small NB's. They're an AIO and come in three sizes, the smallest is 1-3 lbs. Might be worth looking into. Also, Kawaii makes a smaller pocket diaper that fits from 6lbs called the pure and natural that is very budget-friendly.

  • We started with disposables and she has a wicked rash that I'm really struggling to clear up so I wish we hadn't. We have prefolds and honestly I kind of hate them so I just ordered 2 Kissaluvs to see if they're better but they need a cover.
  • You could also consider a diaper service until they fit the OS diapers.  My mom treated us to a 10 week trial from a local company for the start.  That way I got to use CDs right off the bat, but I didn't have to do the laundry while I was trying to figure out being a new mom.

All of this!   I would definitely be all over the $ saving + not running out.
