chicco key fit 30 carseat

I have starting to look at strollers and car seats. I found out the the chicco key fit 30 have one of the highest safety ratings for 2013, when i read reviews a lot of people are complaining that it is heavy and bigger then most or they have a hard time putting in the cart at a store or something. Have anyone used this car seat or know someone that has? What do you think, I mean safety is very very important to me, but i want to be able to use it in all the ways i should be able to.

Re: chicco key fit 30 carseat

  • I used the Chicco Keyfit 30 system for my LO and plan on using it this time around too. I didn't think it was too heavy, and once it started to get too heavy, it was about time to switch to a convertible car seat anyway

  • We borrowed a chicco car seat and it was pretty heavy without a baby in it. When they are tiny it'snot a big deal, but it would be hard for me to carry them in it as they get bigger. We had a Graco Snugride 35 and liked it.

Some of our friends have Chicco's and they all complian about how heavy they get.

  • This is the car seat we decided to go with. I believe it is a pound or two heavier than the Gracco Snug Ride but my feeling about it was at the end of the day when you have a baby in the car seat 1 to 2lbs wont make much of a difference.

  • I loved our Chicco key fit last time, although I think I'm going with a Britax this time because we can get a deal through dh's work. The Chicco doesn't click into the shopping cart easily, but I've seen alot of things saying you shouldn't do that anyway, too dangerous. It isn't bigger than the other car seats, in fact we got it because it fit in the back of our Prius better than the others we tried (and was one of the 2 that had been crash tested with the handle up).
  • We had it and were very happy with it. No issues.

  • We had it with DS and will use them with the twins. We live in the city so I use it a ton in the SNG stroller as well as the car. DS was a big baby and I never had a problem with the weight. We used it as a car seat until DS was close to a year. I would advise against the travel system though b/c the stroller is awkward and heavy IMO. I would go with a SNG at first and then just choose the stroller you want for when LO is sitting up.

  • Websites and manufactures make it kind of misleading but ALL carseats sold in the US have to maintain the same safety rating or they cannot be sold.

  • This is the carseat we r going with!
  • That is the carseat we originally planned on using for DD.  It would not work in our car, and I know a few other people who had the same experience.  We ended up with the Graco Snugride 35
  • We had this seat and it was fine.  Yes, it's slightly heavier than the seats that don't reach the 30 pound limit.  But truly, it's not THAT much heavier but you also won't use that seat until your baby is 30 pounds, mark my words.  If you like it, fine, but don't let yourself be too swayed by the ability to use it for longer because most kids outgrow an infant seat by height long before they reach the weight limit.

The cart issue....  I didn't read what you read so I'm making a guess here as to what the comments were about and it's an important point even if I'm wrong :)  Chicco seats don't have notches cut into the bottom of the seat.  These do appear on other seats like the Snugride so that you can sit the seat in the front part of a carriage.  Please know that whether the notches are there are not, this is absolutely not safe.  The seat does NOT latch on the cart and it's very easy for the seat to become dislodged and fall from the cart and can cause serious injuries.  A lot of people don't realize this and think the lack of notches on the Chicco makes it inferior.  In reality, they did this intentionally to dissuade people from putting it in the cart that way.  Unfortunately, I still see people doing it.

  • I used it for my first and didn't have any issues with the weight and she was in the 90 percentile for weight. I had no trouble carrying her into daycare even in heels.  We switched to the Britax Marathon convertable at 9.5 months. You won't use it at 30 lbs, most pass the length limit well before the weight limit.

ETA: Please don't put the carseat in a cart, it isn't safe.  I never had reason to need to do this.  I just used the snap n go (there is a keyfit caddy now) or left the kiddo at home.

  • loved our chicco.  I carried around two with no big issue.  Highly recommend the snap and go

  • I have this car seat and loved it. You do have to put it in the shopping section of the cart but it is really safer that way anyway. I didn't have any problems.
  • I have the Key Fit 30 and used it with my first.  We had no issues with it being too heavy, but never used another to compare it to.  Once it got too heavy to carry her around it, we were ready to just leave the carseat in the car and take her out anyway.

And like others have said, carseats are NOT supposed to be used in the front of a cart.  Not safe whether they have notches or not.  Put the carseat in the big part of the cart or wear the baby.

  • I used the Chicco Key Fit 30 for DS1 and loved it. I will be using it again.

It was never too heavy for me.  I also didn't mind putting the car seat in the "grocery portion" of the shopping cart. I don't think you should ever put them on the higher area anyway.   The Chicco carseat works well with the Snap N Go and the BOB (with infant attachment)

  • I love the Chicco, it does get heavy, but they all do with the baby in it! You're not supposed to put the car seat in the front of the shopping cart anyway. The only thing that gets annoying is that the Chicco is a different adapter for any stroller that has a carrier option

  • We have this car seat - it saved my son's life during a roll-over car accident when he was three months old.

According to the weight data I've seen, it's ONE pound heavier than the Graco. Seriously - not that bad. EVERY baby in ANY car seat feels heavy if you lug them around enough. I used the Maclaren Easy Traveler (their "snap-n-go") because the Chicco version hadn't been released yet when DS was born - so much easier than carrying the seat itself.

And what other things are you supposed to be able to use it for? (You said "I want to be able to use it in all the ways I should be able to.") You should be able to use it in the car. You should be able to carry baby in it. You should be able to let baby sit in it at  restaurant. You should be able to attach it to compatible strollers. There really isn't much else - you should NEVER put it in the top part of a grocery cart. Put it in the big section and place your groceries around it.

  • I have it and love it and will use it again for this babe. It is on the heavier side but its so easy to snap into the base and adjust the straps. I transitioned DD into a convertible around 9 months bc she just got too heavy for me to carry in the infant seat. But up until then it was great.

  • We used this seat with our last DS and it worked out very well.  Play around with the different seats in the store and see what works for you (and what fits in your car).  The Chicco seat would not fit rear-facing in DH's Ford Fusion Hybrid,  Strange.  It didn't matter because we had to get a second seat anyway but I would have been annoyed if we had bought it for that car.    Good Luck!

  • We have the chicco keyfit 30 as well and will use it again for this LO. I'm a little person and I had no problems carrying DS around in it.

We transferred to the convertible for my vehicle around 9-10 months and he's transferring to the convertible this week in DH's car. He has a Toyota Salara (2 door camry) and it fit in his backseat no problem.
