Tell me your experience w/ Spotting?

Hi Ladies,

I am 6 weeks and basically having a period kind of bleeding (3 or 4 days now.) I am going in on Monday and Wednesday to get a blood test and find out what's going on. I do not really have cramping ( just light back pain) but this feels so much like my period.

When I reached the doc on call for my OB's office, she said, "abdominal pain plus bleeding is a real problem, but let's get you in for a blood test and see what's going on... whether it's a miscarriage."

I know miscarriage is implied here, but I wish she hadn't said it. I feel like this is a lot of bleeding. I am curious what other peoples' experiences have been. Thanks for sharing them with me.

 Thanks!!

Re: Tell me your experience w/ Spotting?

  • When you say bleeding, what do you mean? Are you filling a pad quickly or at all? Is it bright red? I have not had spotting, but I do know some spotting is fine but if you are filling a pad you should be either seen immediately or go to the ER to make sure everything is fine. I'm not trying to alarm you, but i'm surprised that your doctor's office was so casual about it.

  • It really depends on the bleeding from everything I have read. Usually, bright red blood isn't good. They don't worry much about a little brown spotting though. And if there is a large volume, you should head to the ER. If it is a small anount, I would wait and get checked out tomorrow.

  • It was brown for a day or two and just barely panty-liner territory, then it got heavier.

Now it is bright red, like a period, kind of syrupy (sorry so gross), but no not bleeding thru pads. I am using a medium weight pad and changing every few hours.

  • Hmm, maybe "bright red" isn't the word. It is dark red like my period would be.

It's just weird, this feels exactly like my period, lower back pain, and dark red blood. I also never ever used pads when not pregnant (tampons, of course) so it might seem like more blood to me than it actually is cause I have no reference for pads. But no, I am not bleeding through pads. I could go a few hours before changing the pad.

  • I have never had spotting with my pregnancies. The people who do, usually say its brown blood. It is usually just when they wipe. If you are filling a pad every few hours, and it is bright red. I really don't believe that is normal. I hope that everything turns out fine for you. Also, with going to the ER, there isn't anything they can actually do for you. I am sorry.

  • Yes, I figure the ER can't do anything anyway so why mess up my whole day and throw my family into tumult to get there and sit there all day. If something is wrong, it will still be wrong on Monday, or if it's ok.
  • I am sorry : I definitely know people who bleed through their first tri. And everything's fine. I hope you are one of those people!
Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • I am having a similar experience.  At 6w 1d yesterday, I had moderate bright red bleeding, but wasn't filling a pad.  I am still bleeding today, exactly the same. It's definitely more than "spotting" and enough to terrify me, especially being a first time mom.  I went to the ER, and they did a pelvic and an ultrasound.  We saw the baby on the ultrasound and everything looks A-OK...we even saw a heartbeat of 117!  My advice would be to wait it out.  If your cramps get worse, or if you start getting any clots, go immediately to the ER.  But other than that, like you said, there's nothing you can do.  Put your feet up, and try to relax.  I know, easier said than done, but know that you're not alone!

  • Im sorry your experiencing bleeding, I know how scary it can be. Unfortunately there is no way to tell what your bleeding means without seeing your doc and having tests/ultrasounds. You could be miscarrying but there are other reasons for bleeding, even bright red bleeding.

Ive posted about it a few times on this board, I currently have a subchorionic hemorrhage and it has caused a lot of bleeding. Ive been bleeding on and off for a week. At times I have gushes that fill a heavy overnight pad in about 45 min. Ive had 2 ultrasounds this week and 4 total for the pregnancy and so far all as been well with baby.

As for the ER if you fill 2 pads in an hour you need to be seen, or if your filling about a pad an hour for 2-3 (or more) hours you need to be seen right away. In those cases you could be loosing a dangerous amount of blood. Otherwise its a personal decision to go or not to go. They can provide an ultrasound and some answers prior to being able to see your regular doc, but other than that there is nothing they can do. They can't stop your bleeding or an impending miscarriage at this stage. I was told by an on call nurse to go to the ER on friday and it was a waste of my time mostly. I have decided I will not go back for bleeding unless I am loosing a dangerous amount of blood.

I hope you get answers and the spotting/bleeding stops asap!

  • Thanks, Ladies.

I have conflicting gut feelings about whether something is wrong or not. I guess we'll see soon.

  • Im in limbo just like you. Been spotting off an on for about a week. Brown, Red, Pink. Went to the OB Thursday, they brushed me off but did do an U/s (saw ges and yolk sac but nothing else). Had a "good" quant done and go tomorrow for another. My first pregnancy was a m/c and it literally devastated me so much. I have one DD and I dont know why this is why I feel so much more relaxed right now. I know these things happen and if theres anything I've learned is there is nothing you can do to stop it. Hang in there I know its tough!

  • Sorry to hear that you are bleeding very scary for sure! All the ladies have basically said what needs to be said thoughts are with you though!

I had a mc at 6 weeks in November I was away at a destination wedding so heartbreaking. As it was happening, I knew it had to be a mc no questions. Blood was increasing in volume, passing clots etc. I went up the doctor the morning after we got back and they confirmed it with an us.

This time around 7 weeks and started spotting brown still scared but taking it easy. I have an 8 week us next week.

Just keep monitoring it, put your feet up and try to relax. TP are with you.
  • I had bleeding like that in my first pregnancy at 7w4d and sadly it was from a mc. Please don't let that freak you out, my point is that I have seen many many posts on here from others who have also had bleeding like that and their baby was fine. Bleeding can happen because of many different reasons. What you might want to consider going to the ER for is to make sure you aren't having an ectopic pregnancy which could be fatal to you. At 6 weeks, I would assume you haven't had your first u/s to confirm your pregnancy is where it is supposed to be. Follow your heart!
Feeling like a big bloated hormonal whale of a tale. It's awesome.
  • I can't really give you any advice aside from what everybody else has already said, but I didn't want to read and not post. I'm so sorry you're going though this, and I'm hoping for the best possible outcome for you and your baby. I had a similar issue with my first pregnancy, which unfortunately did end in miscarriage. In my case, it was another several weeks of blood tests and ultrasounds to confirm (my betas were still doubling for a while). I know how awful it is to have to wait for answers and not be able to do anything about what's happening to you. I absolutely hope you are not having a miscarriage, and have others have said, there are other reasons you could be bleeding and still have things turn out fine.
  • Just a couple of anecdotes:
I have had two early losses--one with on and off spotting for a couple of days before full-on bleeding and the other went straight to full-on bleeding.

Both times, the blood was originally brownish in color and quickly progressed to bright red with cramping and clots.

My best friend had a healthy baby in September:  She had what she thought was a period in her fifth or sixth week.  For her, everything was totally fine.

Best wishes to you.  I hope it's nothing.

  • Thanks so much, ladies, for your T&Ps and your sharing your own painful stories. It sounds like it's a 50/50 situation from what I'm hearing and reading. I guess I'll see this week. Sorry to those who are also going through this right now or have been through it already to sad results. Hoping for healthy babies for us all!
