3rd Trimester

Right ear sore/congested?

Not sure what to make of this but for the past few days I've been extra congested although I've been congested in general most of the pregnancy and my right ear is sore off and on. Mostly hurts when I bite down. I don't feel sick, just the normal end of pregnancy stuff :

Any thoughts? DH said maybe a sinus infection but I've never had one so I don't know what it feels like...

Re: Right ear sore/congested?

  • Could very well be a sinus infection, effects everyone differently. Also could just be drainage in your ear that's uncomfortable, but no big deal. I would go to the doctors to have them rule out ear or sinus infection... But I am super prone to both, so overly cautious. GL and hope you feel better!

  • Thanks. I'm getting induced tomorrow so where this would normally take precedent, I feel like it's going to have to wait!?

I woke up today and it definitely still hurts and I am congested as usual, with sorry, gross lots of it running down my throat!

  • Sounds like a sinus infection. I would just make your doctor aware. Maybe they'll give you something after the birth.
I have one too and have been congested for 2 weeks now, with baby coming tomorrow as well. Fun times. Hope you're feeling better soon.

  • At least call the OB and tell them what's going on. They could let you know what to take today or tonight to help relieve the congestion. I had a sinus infection about a month ago and they let me take some medicine that helped with the pressure.

  • Could be a sinus infection or an ear infection. I 'd go to the doc or to Target Clinic or something and get checked  out.  Sinus infections usually involve a lot of nasal congestion, and when you blow, it is green / yellow, and sometimes a headache or facial tenderness / pressure.  I have one right now. :-)

  • Well the doctor called me before I called him. I'm at the hospital now. He offered to induce me a day early! I'll have to worry about the sinuses and ear later haha!

  • I am now on my second (double) ear infection of this pregnancy after not having an ear infection since I was 12.

In order for the middle ear to function properly (which is what is affected most when there's an upper respiratory infection of any kind), it must be filled with air and the air pressure must be the same on both sides of the drum. The Eustachian tube controls the air pressure by allowing air into the middle ear. It connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and throat. That's the same place that gets inflamed tissues and mucus when a person develops a cold. As a result, the Eustachian tube gets congested and becomes blocked, causing fluid to build up in the middle ear.

You can feel the "blockage" (like it kind of sounds like you're underwater) and it can be sore but not necessarily be infected. On the other hand, you can have an ear infection and not necessarily be in agony.

Anyway, point is, the middle ear is often affected when there's mucus and congestion. I would suggest Mucinex or another expectorant that is on the approved list to try and move that mucus.
