Shower cake frustration...vent

So I am trying my hardest to stay out of any planning/prepping for my shower...its being planned by 8 people already (in-laws doing food, my mom, sister and best friends doing the rest). Anyways, I already know that the theme is Lion King, as is most of my nursery. My Mom is having such a hard time finding local bakeries who still do Lion King cakes of any sort (it was just re-released in late 2011). I keep telling her and my best friend the "whole shower" does not have to be Lion King, but they won't listen.

My shower is in two weeks and I am already having a hard time "butting out", not that anyone has told me to. I tend to be the planner for showers and parties and it's hard to relinquish that kind of control for my own. But with the stress over the cake its really hard to not try to help.

Sorry just had to vent a little!

  • I would look on Etsy or online to help them with ideas. You just send them a photo of what you want the cake to look like. Its pretty simple.

  • A cake doesn't seem like that big of a thing to stress over.  I really really hope my family did not plan some theme for my shower, I would hate to think they were running all over town to find matching items when no one really cares about baby shower themes, in my opinion.

  • I agree it's not something to stress over, but if it will help you relax, can you suggest something to them? Maybe since nobody will do a Lion King cake, can they do a more simple cake... Like.. A jungle theme? Maybe just some trees or something with a lion king saying. Just a thought.

  • If it makes you feel any better...

I have 4 friends that are the main planners, and they have been nice enough to include the grandma's to be as much as possible.  I have been wanting to stay out of the planning as much as possible, I feel like they are throwing this for me, I should just show up and be grateful, so I don't want to intrude.  Well MIL tells me on Tuesday "I need to call your friend, I think I was supposed to put down the deposit."  My shower is next weekend, so there were 10 days left at that point. The planning meeting was before Thanksgiving, and she has yet to put down the deposit 10 days prior, which I'm sure nobody asked her, she volunteered.  Queue panic mode, and me wanting to strangle MIL.  So cake = not that big a deal, IMHO lol

  • I would just suggest that the cake be in pale orange and yellow tones, and maybe a touch of chocolate.  You don't need a big lion on it.

Give your two cents then stop talking to them about your shower.

I know nothing about my shower.

  • Like everyone else is saying, you really need to stop worrying about your shower. I would stop talking about it immediately and let them deal with the cake. The fact that cake is your biggest issue right now should tell you how blessed you are.

Honestly, they are probably stressing over the cake because they want to make sure it is up to your standards, particularly if you are the planner of the group. I would think you helping them would exacerbate the situation.

  • I wouldn't even think twice about the cake.  It is a cake that nobody is going to care about.   Its the same as wedding showers, there is no point in worrying about little details, let the hostesses take care of everything and enjoy the gift!

  • Thanks ladies! I know the cake is nothing to stress over really...I just know how my best friends can get about "theme parties". I have told them repeatedly not everything has to be Lion King...to be honest not everything I picked out for the nursery is Lion King (I have a mix of Lion King, Winnie the Pooh and turtle/frog items). It's more stressing that they want everything to be the same when I know no one is really going to care, nor take a second thought if it's not the same except them.

I just repeated to them that not everything has to match and that I am staying out of what is left and will just show up and be thankful that they are so wonderful to host the shower for me and LO.
