C-sections

When to call/go in

I am opting for a repeat csection with this pregnancy, even though my doctor isn't pressuring me either way.

So at my visit today she did an internal and said I was almost 2 cen dilated.

She said to obviously call if my water breaks or I go into labor. If I decide while in labor that I want to ride it out and have a VBAC that is fine, but to call and tell them.

I am 100% sure I want to have the csection, after everything we went through with DD I just don't want that experience again.

So my question is.... when do I call if I go into labor before my csection date?

Contractions have been on and off for the past 4 days. Painful at times but it just stops all together and won't come back for a few hours.

Do I wait until I am in 5-1-1 kind of labor to call? or sooner, like every 10 mins?

thanks!

Re: When to call/go in

  • With my 1st I got frustrated because they kept moving the finish line for me.  I called when I was having contractions every 5 minutes.  They said ok call back when they are every 3 and painful.  I call back every 3 and painful.  They said ok call back when they are so painful you can't talk (not sure how you're supposed to call if you can't talk).  I finally told my husband I was going to have the baby in the living room because I was not calling them anymore.  I woke up the next morning and my water broke, I did a celebration dance, called my H, and had my c-section.   I would say the 5-1-1 and just go with their recommendations from there.  They will give you the option to come into L&D at that point and it's your call.  They pretty much won't do the c-section before the scheduled appt unless you're in labor or your water breaks.

  • My dr said 8 mins apart for 2 hours. Since the new rule is 39 weeks he has to have a solid reason to do a c/s before then and I need to be in true labor.  Since I live 90 mins from hospital he didnt want me making a wasted trip so he said 8 mins apart for 2 hours steady.

  • Interesting question. I am having a scheduled C-section this time around (first C-section was an emergency after 24 hrs of labor with 10lbs baby. Not doing that again!) and even though I have a surgical due date, this has crossed my mind. What if I do go into labor before the scheduled C-section?? Glad you posted this. I am going to bring it up at my next appt so I can make a plan with my Dr., just in case.

In your case, I would call your Dr immediately and ask him/her.

  • I've been told that if I feel I'm in labor or if my water breaks I am supposed to call immediately. I'm also having a repeat csection and if I end up dialating it could be very dangerous if I were to wait too long.
