Blood in stool from WCM, Rash/Diaherra from Lactose free...

Here is our backstory... around 5 months we noticed blood in my sons stool, the pedi said the milk(diary) based formula was the culprit and to switch to soy. We did and around 6 months my son started to develop a rash on his face which got worse over the months. We now know it is eczema mixed with dermathis (sp?). After seeing dermatologist and allergist to identify this we also learned after habing him allergy tested that he showed positive for a allergy to soy. Therefore we switched back to the diary based formula (as we were told that reintroducing it may have solved the issue.) Around 10 months we started WCM. At 11 months we noticed the blood throughout his stool again. At his 12 month appt this month the pedi instructed me to try soy milk, even after I told her about his allergy test. Instead of trying soy milk I tried lactose free Vitamin D. I had several friends on my FB say they had similat problems and lactose free milk solved the blood in the stool issue. He has been on lactose free for almost a week and has been diarrhea (about 6 poopy diapers a day) and now has developed his first real bad diaper rash. His poor bottom is raw. I instantly stopped the lactose milk last night and am puzzled at what to do. I am on the fence about trying soy milk because he tested positive for a allergy to it. I've had several people recommend goats or almond milk. Anyone have any experience with this? As for goat/almond milk, do they lack the fat that is in WCM? Any help is greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you may be dealing with a milk/soy protein intolerance and/or allergy.  Lactose is the milk sugars and is different than milk protein.  Many people are lactose intolerant but not as many are protein intolerant.  An intolerance is when his body processes the food that's a problem and an allergy is a systemic reaction.

Have you eliminated all hidden soy in his diet?  Soy is in a surprising amount of  foods, especially processed and snack foods.  Is there any chance he has been ingesting it lately?  (during the holidays it's so easy to slip up b/c of all the special stuff)

I would suggest a RAST test with the allergist (blood test) for the top 8 and possibly meeting with a pedi GI specialist.

Almond milk is not a great substitute for a 1yo, coconut milk would be better.

Thank you! I might look into a local GI specialist. Where can I find coconut milk? Would  it matter if we haven't introduced nuts into his diet yet? I guess maybe I should start that, huh.

Your story sounds like mine. A total loss of what to do. At least your LO is old enough for a milk substitute. Mine is only 5 months. All the way to Elecare with no end in sight.  Good luck.

Lucas has been MSPI since a month old. He transitioned to enriched rice milk since he failed with almond and coconut. He also failed with hemp. Lactose free milk would not be okay for a dairy Intolerant child because a dairy Intolerance is the inability for a baby to tolerate milk proteins, lactose is the sugars in the milk. Two totally separate issues.  Lucas had blood in his stool until dairy and soy were eliminated from our diets. Soy is in almost everything. Most cookies, processed foods, even broths and soda!  RAST and allergy testing is not accurate until age 2 or 3. It is accurate if they test positive but they can have allergies to things they test negative for. Most allergists will not test before age two. If he was positive for soy then most boxed, or outside your house foods contain soy. It is not a fun allergy. He cannot eat regular puffs, any baby cookies, crackers, etc. I am still nursing so over the past year I've accumulated a wealth of recipes and foods he can eat. Most lunch meat is NOT ok, as well as any packaged proteins (frozen chicken).

I would eliminate all dairy and soy, hidden included and see if it helps. See if he will tolerate hemp milk or enriched rice milk. You can always get the fats from foods if he's not picky. Avacado, beans etc.  you can add flax oil to shakes made with coconut or almond milk yogurt and fruit and also baked goods. Hope some of this helps.

Lucas sees a GI monthly.  Coconut milk is at wegmans or probably any supermarket. So delicious makes a good one. If he is allergic to tree nuts then coconut won't work.
