Not sure if this would be the right board. Next month when my lo is 6m, we're planning on starting solids. I really would prefer to skip rice cereal and start her on avocado, but the pediatrician is not on board at all. I'm afraid to go against what she says because I don't want lo to have any type of reaction...thoughts? What did you start your lo on? Help, i'm so torn!

Re: Rice cereal
Rice cereal is just a processed food with absolute no nutritional value for baby. I get not wanting to go against the doctor but in this case you ate right and you know best.
I started LO on everything. We did BLW and I started him on whatever was on my plate, never followed the "introduce one food at the time" rule since there are no food allergies or sensitivities in either side of the family. GL! Oh and avocado is the best food you could start LO on!

I started both of my kids on bananas and they did fine. I didn't give them rice cereal at all until much later, at which time I only did it b/c they weren't getting enough iron.
I would just skip it and not worry about the pedi. How will he/she know anyway?

I did BLW as well... completely skipped rice cereal but for the iron reason, I gave DD baby oatmeal to eat with her hands a few times, but she had a rash on her belly each time and cried later in the night, so I think she may have reacted funny to it...
Now I make sure that she has some meat (in appropriate shapes) each day to ensure iron. Loved BLW.
Baby Led Weening (I believe).
We skipped rice cereal. I didn't see any need for it and reports of arsenic in rice sealed my resolve. We started with avocado, sweet potato, banana, multi-grain baby cereal. We then moved on to various veggies and fruits. She has taken to pretty much everything. She's not overly enthusiastic about green beans but will eat them so we keep at it hoping she will acquire a taste for them. At 7 months, we introduced proteins including beans and lentils (we're vegetarians). We do a combination of homemade and packaged organic baby foods.
Trust your instinct. Different docs have different schools of thought. Our doc said we "must" give her three meals a day. I believe in letting her eat when she's hungry and not forcing her when she's not.
Here is a link for a Q&A post I wrote about BLW for my blog. Hope it helps!
