Natural Birth

Keep seeing this with c-sections....

A cut or nasty scratch on the baby's face. I know it's not that big of a deal, but I've seen it on several babies of friends in my Facebook feed who gave birth via Caesarian. Is this common?

Re: Keep seeing this with c-sections....

  • Did it actually come from the c-section or their fingernails? I'm pretty sure my daughter scratched her face within the first second of coming out of the womb.

  • I know that with at least one of them, it WAS from the c-section itself because the parent mentioned it in the photo caption ("Don't be alarmed, it's just...."). But you make a good point; I didn't think about the fingernails. It's just a tiny bit scary to see any kind of cut on a newborn!

  • I've seen fingernail scratches, but never a cut.  I once saw a baby who had raw marks on her knuckles, and that was a perfectly normal vaginal birth.  Strange abrasions sometimes happen.
