Running Regiment? [Lurker Q]

Anyone have a good running regiment during the pregnancy? Prior to this pg, I was about 3-4x a week, with speed/tempo/track/LSD (think FIRST training if you've heard of it). I've been off my feet for about 2 months since the first tri is always really, really hard for me. I'm thinking I'm feeling better (and keeping real food down) and since I'm not on restricted activity this time, I'd like to get some ideas for a weekly running regiment. I'm a "technical" runner, so I like to have a training plan and different workouts. I know I can't raise my HR (per OB due to being HR), but I can still run (or jog).

Any insights on what would make up for a good training week is helpful. I'm too dizzy to add in spinning/biking as XT, but would add swimming if I can find a pool. I'd like to keep some semblance of a fitness base for the fall running season and spring 2014 tri season, as I'm due in July.

TIA.

Re: Running Regiment? [Lurker Q]

  • I'm 16 weeks pregnant. I was a serious runner before being pregnant. 5-8 miles was my regular distance. I am now only going 3 or 4 and I do it as many days of the week as I feel like, but at least 5. I feel pretty good now and sometimes feel like going everyday so I do. I also bought a prenatal pilates dvd that I am using for some strength and flexibility. However, it's hard to be "regimented" right now when our bodies are so unpredictable. One day last week I could literally only run 9:45-10 minute miles. I was shocked to see those numbers on my Garmin, but you know what? I finished it, and I lapped the people on the couch! So try what you can now that first trimester is over, but don't be hard on yourself if you can't handle it one day!

  • My thought on this is take each day as it comes - some days running feels effortless, other days I'm exhausted! In the "ideal" pregnancy running week, I run 6 days a week - usually about 3 miles a day with a 5 to 6 mile run on Tuesdays and Saturdays. I'm doing my best to just enjoy running itself and not stress about mileage :) Yoga has been great while pregnant, too...

Before getting pregnant, I had run a marathon two months before - going from "marathon training mode" to "pregnant runner" has been a huge change but I'm starting to love it! It's a blessing we CAN run while pregnant :) And, hey, the exercise is good for our babies, too!

It's been hard to accept slowing down and low mileage weeks, but it's worth it! I'm hoping to run my next marathon in October 2013, so training mode will return in its due time. Happy pregnant running!
