Cleaning up puke in the carseat

So after almost 23 months, my daughter finally got me....she puked in the car last night. It was mostly on the blanket in her lap and her clothes, but it inevitably got on the carseat straps and into the buckle. Any tips on how to get the puke smell out? I cleaned it last night with a multi purpose windex and the smell was still terrible. And, it's 15 degrees outside here so I know in the summer it would be way worse. Tonight, I did Shout spray on an old toothbrush and scrubbed like crazy. I think a lot of the smell is gone. Any other tips? I can't get the chunks out of the buckle either!

Re: Cleaning up puke in the carseat

  • Take the car seat out of the car.  Remove the cover (NOT the straps).  Wash the cover in the washing machine.  Set the car seat on your dining table and bring over a little bucket of warm soapy water (if the sink isn't close) and wipe down the straps and the bucket and the whole frame of the seat.  It shouldn't really smell after a good cleaning like that.  If it does when you first get up spray it with Febreeze or something then put it all back together.  Reinstall.

  • Hate to say it but you may need to replace the harness straps now. You can't clean them with anything other than warm water and mild dish soap (dawn). Anything else can cause the seat belt material to disintegrate and put your child at risk.
