Ew, ew, mouse....freaking out!

OMG I was sitting in the living room today and saw a mouse go running across the floor and into the dining room. It was so gross and now I'm absolutely freaking out. Since I've seen one, now I'm in a complete panic that we have tons that I can't see, and that we're going to get salmonella from the droppings/chewing. I keep the house clean, we never have any food sitting out, have a trashcan with a lid, and I haven't seen any mouse droppings yet but it's just so gross. DH is bringing home a bunch of traps and stuff tonight, but I'm just not even sure where to start to completely fix the problem.

Of course now I feel like a huge failure and that our house is unfit for a baby. Having a full on, crying meltdown here, please help with any suggestions or help with getting rid of mice!

PS - it should be noted that I'm writing this post from the couch that I've been too scared to leave since the mouse sighting. DH can't get home fast enough tonight.

Re: Ew, ew, mouse....freaking out!

  • Not to freak you out more but it's really not good for pregnant women to breathe air where mice are.  Mice carry viruses that can affect an unborn baby.  The reason that I know this is is because I used to teach at a school that had a mice problem.  I would call an exterminator to make sure you get all the mice.  They are hard to get rid of.  I'm sorry that you are having to go through this.

  • I would just set a trap in each room. Ours always like peanut butter. My parents house that is. They live in the county so they tend to get in. I did get 3 mice in my car one winter when it was really cold one year if that makes you feel better!

  • The other thing you can do is see if you can find where mousie got in at. It could be something as simple as bad weather stripping on an outside door, or a small hole in your foundation. Close off the mouse highway so you don't get anymore unwanted visitors.

  • Dont try to DIY... Call an exterminator. They know what to look for and have better traps. The critters are getting in through your crawl space or basement, or even through a tiny hole or crack in an exterior wall. They need to be cut off b4 thry get into the house proper, ie where you can see them.

  • I saw a mouse in our basement a few months ago and freaked out!! DH bought sticky traps and put peanut butter on them but they never caught anything. About a week later I came downstairs and one of my cats had killed the mouse and was laying by it. DH had to come home from work to throw it away because I was so scared.

    Get some cats haha.

  • We're currently battling with one too.  It sucks but it doesn't mean you're a slob or that you've done something wrong.  Good luck - I've found the snap traps to be the best but we're probably going to put out poison for our little bugger who has licked he peanut butter off of 2 traps and hasn't triggered them yet!!
  • Don't feel bad it has nothing to do with your cleanliness!! They sneak in in the winter to survive. Try to find the source of the issue where they got in and my parents always used traps with peanut butter. If in a couple of days you haven't caught it or are still concerned call an exterminator.

  • This is so coincidental...  I JUST found mouse droppings in our house (kitchen, yeuch!) yesterday evening...  and trust me, I keep a VERY clean house.   Obviously it's that time of year when they start making a concerted effort to break-in.  Sigh.

We're off shortly to pick up a couple of humane mouse traps.  Just what I had in mind for my weekend (*eyeroll*).

  • DH came home last night with two measly traps, which I told him are completely insufficient. Where's the steel wool to fix any holes? Where's the exterminator? He then told me that my reaction is totally over the top, and that he had a pet mouse living in the closet of his disgusting old apartment for months, until it died and started to smell. Eeeew! Now we've reached a compromise, and an exterminator will be called if we discover more than 1 mouse. I'll also be heading out today for steel wool and electronic deterrents. I had the electronic things in my old place a drafty old historic house and they seemed to work pretty well.

  • I set traps in our house last year and caught the mice that were there. Since I set the trap (that I was terrified I was going to snap my hand off with) I made my husband take care of the newly dead animals.

  • I ended up with mice in my first apartment when they started to do some light construction on the apartment next door.  Mice will go where they feel more comfortable, whether it is on your warm house when it gets cold out or in your quiet apartment when theirs gets too loud. :)

Call an exterminator, and make sure he pulls the oven/appliances away the walls, because wherever there is a water or gas pipe coming through a wall, there is a hole.  A lot of times, contractors take a shortcut at these locations because they are hidden, and they are the best place for vermin to enter.

Also, make sure the exterminator is patching holes/cracks with something the mice cannot chew through.  Mine used steel wool filled in with building foam.  While the mice can chew though the foam, the steel wool is not so nice in their mouths. And remember, mice can squish their bodies into the tiniest openings, so long as their skulls can get through, so can they!

    GOOD LUCK!

  • Dh bought this house about the time I met him and since it had sat vacant for a while he had a bunch of mice in the house.

I read online somewhere to put two traps about 1/2-1 inch apart along the floor boards in an area where kids and pets cant reach but the mice frequently run through (next to the refridgerator in our case).  That way if the mouse jumps one it hits the 2nd.

Dh caught 8 mice before the traps stopped catching any mice and no more indications of mice were found.

We married and the kids and I moved in along with the kids' two cats and we haven't seen any trace of mice in almost 2 years now.

FWIW, our cats caught mice at 2 of the 3 houses the kids and I rented after my divorce.

There is also info on how to safely clean up after mice to prevent the hantavirus on the internet if you look for it.

  • I'm hoping that we now have it somewhat under control. We found some droppings by the dishwasher, and I think he might have come up through the dishwasher drain, so we put some traps against the wall near the dishwasher and fridge. Of course now I'm scared that I'm going to open the dishwasher to a big surprise.

FYI though - I was talking to my MIL tonight, and she said there's been a big spike in mouse problems this year because it got so cold so fast. She said there was a story on the news near them that mouse traps have been flying off the shelves. So watch your steps ladies, and I hope none of you have to deal with gross mice!

  • Ok, I've been there and actually called my husband from the top of a chair in our old apartment crying my eyes out.

Here is how we handled the situation: We bought that foamy spray that expands and filled all the holes in the house with it, even the tiny tinie ones.

Unfortunatly that caused the mouse that was out to be traped out and I found it dead next to my Pitbull's bed (who said only cats chase mice?) He is my hero!

Anyways, we also got some cat hair from a friend's cat and spread it around the little corners and under furniture, That seems to scare them away.

And we put a few traps just in case, but they neve caugh any. (Make sure you get the snappy ones not the glue ones (they are just mean, because they don't kill them right away they starve them to death and trust me you don't want to hear a screaming mouse stuck to a glue trap.)

Best of luck to you, and buy this spray is the best thing to keep them away!
