Thoughts on inducing before due date

So I've seen a trend lately where women are getting induced before they even reach their due date. This past June my SIL was induced a couple days before her due date, and a fellow coworker just announced she is being induced early. She is not due until the 6th but she is getting induced this Wednesday because "he doesn't want to come out" Indifferent I understand towards the end you're exhausted and sore and just totally done with being pregnant but come on, if baby and mom are perfectly healthy leave baby in until he's ready to come out on his own! Also, I've heard nothing but painful things about Pitocin and how much more terrible it makes contractions....why would you want to do that intentionally?! Anyone else have thoughts/vents on this topic?

Re: Thoughts on inducing before due date

  • I'm in the way of thinking that baby will come when baby is ready.  If that means I go 41 weeks+, then I go 41wks+.

  • It actually p*sses me off when moms get induced for no medical reason. As for Pitocin though, they 99% of the time give you an epidural with it.

I know someone who was not in labor, and she ended up being in labor for at least 36 hours because she was induced (no labor, no water breaking, no nothing) so her body wasn't really ready. It made me really mad.

I had GD and I was not induced, but went 9 days early (but I think if my doctor knew how big my baby had been or was going to be, she may have induced me).

I completely agree with you.  I'm not a medical professional but I feel like it would make for a much smoother labor and delivery if you let your body do what it's born to do and give birth on its own. I totally get having to do it for an urgent medical reason, but if it's simply out of convenience that's completely ridiculous.

  • Is it something I would choose? No. Do I judge other women for choosing to induce? No. If a woman choses an induction, a csection, a natural childbirth or to attempt to pull the child through thier nose wtf do I care? To each thier own.

  • I agree with u. it irritates me that ppl are sometimes allowed to "choose" to be induced. We are pregnant for 40 weekz for a reason. If mom amd baby are healthy, then i feel they should stick it out until it is time. But thats my opinion i suppose.

  • Yea I was only induced with my last two. My 3rd boy b/c of loss of fluid issues and his size...he was 9lbs 15oz and they thought he was a week early but he was 2 weeks early! And my dd as she had passed. I was over due with my middle boy and a week early with my oldest. They still gave me pitocin with my oldest to kinda speed things along. What else I don't get are the elective c/s for no medical reason. Why risk abdominal surgery just for your convenience?

    Text talk? Really?

Wow. I am on my phone, writing on an informal message board. Not writing an essay or a report for work, or any other document requiring formality. But since it bothered you, I will make more of an effort to write correctly.

  • I'm not a fan of inducing for non medical reasons/convenience before 40w but to each their own.

The bolded was me except I was already 2+ weeks overdue with my 1st and was induced.  My whole experience with my drs/hospital wasn't the greatest.  I was given 3 different due dates so I'm thinking that maybe I wasn't really late, since they tried to induce me and it wasn't working.

I, too, don't like when women get induced for convenience or the ability to pick the baby's birthday.  If baby isn't finished baking, then baby isn't finished. Let nature do what it's supposed to do!  Why rush it?

Oh the girl I knew was induced one day early *eyeroll*. Her baby weighed the same as mine, so it wasn't like her baby was huge or anything and needed to be born now.

My husband's coworker's wife was about 4 weeks late. She said she didn't want to be induced and I don't think she was. She had her baby 4 weeks late, and I think they're all fine.

  • Induction increases your chances of having a Csection....
  • Right now I say I would not induce unless medically necessary. Ask me again in late July/August, I might be miserable and feel differently then.

Actually the trend is going the other way. Many doctors were inducing at 37-38 weeks. This was leading to an increase in NICU admissions. Most hospitals will not allow an elective induction prior to 39 weeks now, and many doctors will not offer until after 40. If she's due on the 6th and being induced on the 2nd, meh. And just because she didn't announce that there is an issue doesn't mean that there isn't. You don't know the whole story. For all you know she has GD or her blood pressure is spiking.

I highly doubt my son would have come out on his own due to size and position. But thankfully you were not in charge of when I was induced. Would you have preferred I just waited until the placenta started to fail and put both of us at risk? I much prefer a failed induction at 40-41 weeks leading to an unplanned c-section over an emergency c-section due to fetal distress at 42 weeks, but that's me.

I have absolutely no issue with inductions in your situations, I said right in my original post that I am against it only if mom and baby are perfectly healthy and it's just out of convenience. Obviously if doctors feel that baby needs to come out ASAP due to a medical reason I am all for that. Saying I would prefer to put you and your baby at risk is ridiculous.

  • I actually had to look around to find an office that will let you go to 42 weeks without induction if there are no other medical issues.  It wasn't easy!  Most say 40-41 weeks max, or they will let you go into the 42nd week but not finish it.  That made me really mad.  I was born only 2 weeks early according to my mom's EDD, but I was much smaller and have had some birth-related health issues my whole life.  And my she even went into labor naturally so I was ready, but it just goes to show that even 2 weeks early can have it's issues.

My SIL had to be induced early because of a blood clotting disorder and the meds she was on, which I understand, but to induce just to "get it out of the way" kind of upsets me.  It's not in the best interest for the baby and just seems like a selfish decision on either the part of the parent or the doctor.

  • Inductions were initially instated to help a mother along who had impending danger to her or the child.  I feel like they have become, however, a procedure of connivance.  Any mother who is two days over is started on a Pitocin drip and may end up with an unplanned c-section, that may or may not have been necessary.

When the fruit is ripe, it will fall from the tree!

A doctor can convince a mother that this procedure is necessary, so if anything, this is on the mother to become educated about the possible side effects of induction.  I'm not trying to vilify OB/GYNs, but I think people need to have a birth plan, and if the pitocin drip has no pertinent medical reason, it should not be included.

     My two cents, anyways

I agree with this. Unless baby or mom is having issues I don't see why the mom should be induced.

This. There are so many risks to early inductions that unless it was warranted, it would never be worth the risk to me.

All of this. I was induced at exactly 40
weeks. I had slow fetal movement and
my Dr. though it made sense for us to induce. I didn't tell too many people I
was being induced for fear of
judgement, even though it was advised. A couple days early is nbd. If it were a week or two and for no reason, that'd be different. I think you'd be hard pressed these days to find a Dr willing to voluntarily induce early for no medical reason.

4 weeks late? That's just negligence. Sorry. This doesn't even make sense. At some point after 42 weeks, it becomes dangerous for a fetus to be still inside you. I may be wrong but i think it's 42 and a half weeks or so. My Dr said they wouldn't let me go past 42 weeks.
