Sleep issues post surgery

Back story, 2.5 yr old DD had her tonsils/adenoids removed 12/10, and was in the hospital for 2 days, home for 2, and back in for another 8 for infection and dehydration.

Since we came home from the hospital about 2 weeks ago, Erin has been screaming for me at the top of her lungs if she awakes during the night or her nap.  It's about 50/50 whether she screams from her room, or gets out of bed and proceeds to yell and cry her way through the house from her room to mine.

I think she got very used to having me RIGHT THERE BY HER when she has her vitals checked every four hours for those 8 days that we were hospitalized, because she calms down the second her hand touches mine.  But she isn't self soothing AT ALL anymore.  If she wakes up, for any reason (winter wind, stupid NYE fireworks, baby brother awake in the night) she screams and cries for me.

I DO NOT want her in our bed, and I don't want to sleep with her every night, but there have been a handful of nights where I've been tired enough to fall asleep, and not wake until I hear James after 6 am.

I had read that sleep can take a major hit after a T&A operation, but.....I'm really struggling here.  Anybody have any advice? (Or know another board this may get some feedback from ..... ?)

Re: Sleep issues post surgery

  • Wow! I thought my DS's recovery from his tonsillectomy was bad but your DD's sounds horrible! Our doctor warned us before the surgery that it is very common for kids to have night terrors after surgery/general anesthesia and that it can take up to 6 months for the sleep cycle to go back to normal! Luckily, for us, it didn't take that long. I would say that it did take 6-8 weeks before DS was sleeping through the night again. It sucked but I knew it wasn't really his fault and I just tried my best to be understanding. Sorry, I don't really have any great advice but just know that this is normal and your DD will come around.

  • DS had skull surgery in July and was in the hospital for 4 days. He had trouble transitioning back home as well due to us being in his room during the hospital stay. I would suggest going in to her room when she cries and placing your hand on her back, or sitting in her room until she calms down again. It took a good two or three weeks for us to get DS to sleep as he had prior to surgery. He proved to be a HUGE daddy's boy after the surgery and we are still working on that! Good luck!
