C-sections

Breech C-Section

Getting no sleep the night before in our excitement, Robert and I made our way to the hospital early for our 5:30 am appointment on Saturday, the 29th.  Once the nurses got me prepped and set up, time moved a lot faster as we were so close to meeting our son.  Surgery went well; they were able to donate the baby?s cord blood though not his cord since I was bleeding a bit more than they preferred so they set to sorting me out.  Baby Matthew Elliott was born at 8:04 am to 7 lbs 5 oz (much smaller than the 9 pounder they had predicted) and 19 in long.  He had a bit of extra fluid in his lungs (from being c-section and breech, no contractions could help squeeze it out).  This put him under special watch for the first two hours so I didn?t get to hold or feed him until after ten am which was sad but necessary for him.

We spent two nights in the hospital healing as best we could.  I had done lots of research on c-sections and tried to speed up my own healing in safe ways like getting up and walking as soon as possible after surgery, asking to have my saline drip and catheter removed early so I wasn?t bloating, drinking tons of fluids and eating lots of fiber, etc.

We went home on New Year?s Eve to celebrate with our own newborn.  Breastfeeding is challenging, my milk has definitely come in strong and when Matthew eats well it?s great and when he is lazy or too tired or too angry it?s hard and we have to pump and syringe feed him.  Hopefully, if we keep sticking to our routines, he will figure them out along the way and work with us!  Overall, parenting is tougher than expected and yet more fun and fulfilling too.

All in all, the healthy mom/healthy baby/happy dad was the most important thing for us, even over having our ideal birth story.  And now that he is here and so adorable, I wouldn?t trade him for any birth story that wasn?t the exact one we had.

Re: Breech C-Section

  • Congratulations!!  :)

Even though it may not have been the birth story you had imagined, it sounds like you've had a good experience.

I had an emergency C-section due to breech presentation 2 years ago, and it took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I didn't get the natural birth experience I had wanted.  I just had a RCS 8 days ago, and it was the most joyful birth imaginable.  :)

Enjoy your little one!  Time flies!

  • I just had to schedule my c-section a couple hours ago due to a frank breech baby. I'm not happy about it. It is the COMPLETE opposite of the birth I had wanted/planned. I'm trying to come to terms with it before the day. I have 4 weeks. I'm still hoping she decides to flip though, so I can cancel!
