High-Risk Pregnancy

Shortened cervix is now funneling

At 24w2d, after passing a lot of mucus, a transvaginal ultrasound revealed that my cervix was measuring short at 1.8cm with no funneling. I spend the night in L&D and received two steroid injections. I wasn't having contractions, but they told me that I have an irritable uterus. They discharged me from the hospital the next day on modified bedrest and nightly progesterone suppositories.

Today, I am 25 weeks, and I had my first appointment with the high risk doctor. My cervix has now begun to funnel. Has anyone here experienced a similar situation? I am a FTM, and quite frankly, I'm scared out of my wits.

Re: Shortened cervix is now funneling

  • I am so sorry you are going through this. I had my son at 25 weeks he is a healthy 10 year old today. It is good you got the steroids on board. I work in the NICU now and those steroids make a world of difference. What did your doctors say? Obviously, you are probably on bedrest and should stay there. Can they do anything to stop further funneling or shortening of your cervix. Progesterone shots or cerclage? These are some of the most common interventions if feasible. Otherwise it is just bedrest and praying. I will be praying for you and I hope everything stabilizes.

  • This happened with my first pregnancy and I was able to stay pregnant until 35w. Strict bed rest and lots of Dr visits. Did they start you on any medication? Praying you will hold out. Try not to worry and stay calm. You can do this!
  • Im floatin in your boat! At 19.5 weeks my cervix was at a 1.7 with funneling. I was placed on bedrest with nightly progesterone suppositories. I had no cerclage due to it being twins. When I made it to 24 weeks I got my steroid shots. I now have weekly transvaginal ultrasounds to check my length. I'm now going on 28 weeks and have ranged anywhere between a 1.7 to a 2.08 so if you take it easy there is proof here that you can most likely hold out for some time. 8 weeks of bedrest hasn't been easy or fun but it's worked! Hang in there. Baby is viable now so that should take some edge off for you!

  • Sorry to hear you are going through this. @ 25 weeks I had no cervix and was 1cm dilated, and was placed on hospital bed rest. I was just discharged last night at 33 weeks (2 months in the hospital) and placed back on home bed rest.

The cervix is dynamic so it can change. One scan I had some funneling and the next week I did not. So hopefully the progesterone helps! Hang in there and try to take it easy!!

  • bed rest will be your best friend!  I had no symptoms of a shortened cervix (.7cm!) and funneling, but it was discovered at a routine exam at my 21 week appt.  You may be too late for a cerclage, but bed rest and progesterone to keep your uterus calm will help.  Good luck!
