s/o fruit....come in if you make smoothies

I saw in the post below that a lot of you make smoothies on a daily basis.  I'm curious how you make them.  What do you put in, and how much? Do you use a blender or food processor? How much do you make at once?

I only tried making them once for DS; I don't remember what I did but I remember it was a disaster.  Right now I give him a YoToddler drinkable yogurt with breakfast every morning, though...and I bet smoothies would be cheaper and better.

  • Is this for kids, or for you? I make them for my kids a lot. I always start with plain whole-milk yogurt and a banana. Then I add EITHER a scoop of chocolate protein powder (DH's, but whatever) and a spoonful of peanut butter, OR a scoop of vanilla protein powder and whatever other fruit I have on hand (mangos, kiwi, peach, fresh or frozen berries are all good). I thin it out with either milk or some OJ (only for the second version) and sometimes add some flax seed, although too much makes it gunky and my boys won't drink it. If it needs sweetening (usually doesn't) I add a little agave syrup. They always drink them right up.

Those sound delicious!  I would mainly make them for DS; maybe for myself once in awhile.  Do you know if the protein powder is something I'd put in a toddler smoothie, or just stick with the yogurt for that?

You might ask your pediatrician, just to be safe. We get ours from Whole Foods, so there's nothing wonky in it, and I don't put an adult-sized serving in, but I know some commercial protein powders have a lot of artificial sweetener and possibly some proteins you don't want for young kids. I've used hemp protein powder in the past and felt OK with that. The one we like now is just egg-white protein. It's basically dried egg-whites, natural sweetener and natural flavors.

  • I make them all the time for my toddlers.  I have a fancy vitamix but you could just use a regular blender.  I use coconut milk (you could use regular), banana, frozen berries, and kale.  The frozen berries take the place of ice, so if the fruit is all fresh then you will need to add ice.

  • I used to make them more often in a blender that sucks.  I need a better blending option.....BUT I would use vanilla yogurt, banana, berries (strawberries, blueberries or both) and spinach.  They were very thick and tasted sooo yummy.  I need to revisit making smoothies.  I want to do them again but am wanting to cut back on my dairy so will need something other than yogurt....I do want to give this one a try https://www.cheapandsimpleveganrecipes.com/make-ahead-oatmeal-apple-and-peanut-butter-smoothies/

  • I make a daily smoothie, I loooove them.

My most common one is my green smoothie:

2 ice cubes, 1 banana, 1/4c. vanilla greek yogurt, 1/4c. milk, 1 tablespoon peanut butter (I use natural w/ flax seed) and 2 big handfuls of spinach.

^ I do that in a mini blender, I use it just for smoothies. It makes one smoothie at a time. I make it right before I drink it.

I made a new one yesterday that was pretty good.  1c. frozen blueberries, 1 banana and 3/4c. apple juice. Was sweet, I enjoyed it.

  • My favorite is just two frozen bananas with some milk and/or vanilla yogurt.  A splash of OJ added is good too!

When we want something different, I do one banana, a handful of frozen mixed berries (I get a blueberry, raspberry, blackberry combo bag from Costco), and vanilla yogurt.  I'll add a little milk to thin it out if needed.

I have a magic bullet blender, which is great for a large single serving for myself, or a medium sized serving for me and a bay sized serving for DD.  I like it because I can drink right out of the cup that it blends in, and I don't have to wash the blender.  But the blender works just as well.

  • I do plain yogurt, with frozen bananas, frozen berries or other fruit, peanut butter and a little bit of honey, syrup or jam for sweetener. My sister was saying throwing avocado in makes it creamier without changing the flavor. I have a stick blender and it works great, tho you do have to let the frozen stuff thaw a bit before you blend it. My kids love them.

  • I don't make smoothies all that often, but when I do, I do frozen fruit (whatever I have on hand), some milk or juice, yogurt, and a large dollop of tofu to make it extra creamy.  As long as I don't get heavy handed with the tofu, it is almost undetectable, and makes it extra creamy.  If I need to sweeten them, I use honey or maple syrup.

I just got a stick blender, and I love using that for smoothies.  I used to use a blender before it broke, but I hated cleaning the thing (it had one of those spouts for dispensing, and it was a PITA to clean properly).  I have tried using the food processor when desperate, but it is not ideal either.

  • The smoothie I always make is 1 banana, frozen fruit (strawberries, blueberries, whatever is in my freezer), and half of the blender is spinach with a little kale in it. I plan on feeding this to LO when she's old enough!
