LO Barely Eats

LO is very small, not on the charts for height or weight.  My DH and I are also small..I'm 4'11" and 105 lbs and DH is about 5'5" and 140 pounds.  Pedi has never been concerned b/c she thinks he's following his genetic pattern.

I'm amazed at how little he eats.  Here's what I give him in a typical day and here's what he eats:

Breakfast

2 mini waffles - eats maybe 1/4 of one

1 chicken sausage - eats maybe 1/4

1/3 banana - eats maybe 1/2 that

1 4 oz yogurt

Lunch

1 slice salami - eats maybe 1/4

2 crackers - eats them

cheese - has a couple bites

apple slices - eats a couple nibbles

1 4 oz pouch of fruits/veggies

Snack

1 small cereal bar or Goldfish - eats them all

Dinner

1 small chicken cutlet strip - eats maybe 1/4

1/2 cup veggies - eats none

1 1/2 4 oz pouch of fruits/veggies

20 oz of milk

3 oz fruit juice

As you can see he's still getting most of his nutrition from milk, purees and yogurt.  Does this seem shocking?  I'm planning on talking to my pedi at his 15 month appt...

Re: LO Barely Eats

  • Shocking compared to my piggy, yes. Shocking overall, no. I know two people who's lo don't eat at all. In fact, one of them is almost 17 months and she's still EBF, no solids.

  • I would talk to pedi about it at your next apt if you are concerned. Has your LO always eaten like this or is this new?

My LO has started somewhat of a hunger strike. All he wants is carbs, like crackers and chips. He refuses to eat meat, pretty sure he is a vegetarian.

If I gave my LO nothing but yogurt and Ritz crackers he'd eat like a horse.  He's just VERY picky.

He's always been like this.  Purees have even been a challenge on/off for us.  At his 12 mo appt. he wouldn't really even touch table foods and I mentioned it to the pedi who said some kids just aren't ready to self-feed at 12 months.  He is much better w/ table foods now compared to that, but obviously still eats like a bird.  He's not skinny for his height either.

  • Up until the past month or so N wasn't a big eater. Instead of plain yogurt I started giving her Greek because the protein is double what's in regular. She has really started eating more lately.

I would talk to your pedi and express your concerns at the next appointment. If he doesn't seem concerned then you don't have to be either. I think some kids just aren't big eaters.

  • E is not a big eater either.  He doesn't drink milk and doesn't like it, so he's still on some formula, which may be somewhat filling...not sure.

He eats a few bites of things and that's about it.  Occasionally I'm suprised when he eats more than a few bites of things.

He's not big on purees either, which makes it more difficult.

It was worse last week when he was teething.

  • I was curious as to when you give your LO milk? If we give DS milk before or during a meal he will not eat very much. Given this, he only gets milk first thing in the morning, with a snack, and right before bed. I don't know if this applies to your LO but thought I would throw it out there anyway.

Interesting.  I give it to him about an hour before breakfast and at the same time as dinner.  Hmm.

  • My oldest barely eats. We have found ways to supplement what he eats and he takes vitamins. He's very thin but still very healthy. It amazes me how little he can survive on especially considering how active he is. I just make sure he's not overdoing it with sugar and empty calories but I refuse to fight with him over food. He always wins because he'd rather not eat than eat certain things and what I am I going to do, force feed him? The "they'll eat if they're hungry" sentiment is a crock.
  • We've been having trouble with my DS as well.  He's always been a picky eater and now he's eating even less.  He mostly likes toast, bagels, waffles (all carbs...) and sometimes we can get him to eat yogurt, hummus, baby cereal (with apple sauce and the like hidden in it) and some baby food purees (mostly veggies)...sometimes he'll eat blueberries and oranges.  He will always go for sweet and crunchy things (raisins galore, cookies, crackers, packaged snack foods, etc.), but I think that's been turning him off the other foods, so I'm currently banning those snacky foods in hopes that he'll get back to eating regular food.

Anyway...I'm waiting for his new batch of teeth to pop through and hoping that he'll renew his interest in table food.  In the meantime, he seems like he gaining weight and has regular diapers, so I'm trying not to be worried.  But it sure is a pain in the butt!!!

  • Levi doesn't eat much but he snacks often.

Levi is almost off the charts, I believe at his twelve month visit he was 6 percent for height and 10 percent for weight.
His doctor mentioned it but said he was not concerned at this point.

I'm 5"2 and 98 pounds and his father is short and stocky.
