August 2011 Moms

Being a grown-up sucks sometimes.

So this might go a little long, and I apologize if it does but I feel like I'm having my first "real" adult big decision time.

I just graduated and now it's time for me to find a job. I've been putting in applications at a few different places. I wasn't doing a lot of heavy searching mostly bc of the holidays but I made sure to apply to at least one job every day for most of December. I had two interviews this week. The first one was assistant to the Executive Director at a non-profit that does a lot of work in the community. I'd be the only other person in the office other than the Exec. Director so I'd wear a lot of different hats, but I'd be in charge of designing newsletters, social media, updating the website, administrative work and helping plan events, etc.

I have a couple connections and I interned at a similar non-profit that works with this one occasionally. But I don't know what my chances are at getting this job yet. I should hear back by the end of next week.

The 2nd job is the manager at a mall-based branch of a research company. It would involve overseeing the staff in pulling people from the mall to participate in taste tests and/or surveys. I would answer to corporate and be salaried so I would expect to be on call anytime the mall is open (nights and weekends)

The man interviewing me said he is very likely going to be calling me with an offer tomorrow because they need this position filled immediately.

I do not want the 2nd job. I know that I don't, but DH is pressuring me to take it if offered bc we need the money and we can't afford to look for a job for a long time. But if I take this job and get the call from the job I actually want I'll feel like such a horrible person for leaving so quickly.

Sorry for the wall of text, I'm just a nervous wreck right now.

What would you do??

  • Any way you could ask Job 2 to give you a week or so to think about it so it would give Job 1 time to make a decision? A week isn't really that long and if Job 2 needs you to start in less than a week I would seriously side eye the company and hesitate on going. If they're that desperate then some bad must have happened or the job is really that terrible that people don't want it and leave quickly. IMO

  • The most important things in life is you and your family. Take the first job to survive, take the next better job that comes up. I worked for a place for less than 8 months and had maternity leave for6 weeks. I felt bad but am much happier.

Also even if you leave the new job in two weeks, they can pull from the same applicants.

  • I agree with Kimbus - If money was tight, I'd take the first job that was offered to me but keep searching. I would feel horrible about it, too, but you just do what you have to to put food on the table, YKWIM?

For the record, I cringed reading the description for job #2, so I would also be less than thrilled to take it. If they do offer it to you, I would maybe try and draw them out a bit (tell them you only have daycare starting X date or whatever) so that you get a chance to find another job before you actually start this one - at least save them from wasting their time and effort on training you.

  • Yeah, Job 1 is interviewing all next week and should have a decision by Friday.

Job 2 is a new branch and already has a new client and the position needs to be filled by Wednesday.

If I get a call from Job 1 on Friday I'll have only been at Job 2 for 2 whole days.
