Toddlers: 24 Months+

Anyones toddler have glasses? and PSA

We just found out yesterday that DD will need to get glasses bc she has a lazy eye.  Any advice on how to get a very stubborn and independent child to wear them?  She only needs to wear them 3-4 hours a day, but I see myself battling w/ her every second.

As far as the PSA.....at her 2 year well visit, they asked if we wanted to do a hearing and vision test.  I asked H and he said yes.  I thought it was a total waste b/c Grace appeared to have absolutely NO issues w/ her eyes.  When the opthamologist asked me yesterday besides the ped referring her, was I concerned and I said absolutely not.  I was shocked when a) the ped referred us to an eye doc in the first place and b) when the eye doc came back and said she was very glad we came b/c we caught it very early and she would in fact need glasses NOW.  Her eye would have eventually started to turn in but we hadn't gotten that far.  H's side of the family has a history of needing glasses very young (BIL and FIL both had them @ 3 years old) but I ignored the family history and went w/ what I thought.  I was wrong.  So if there is any family history of glasses at a young age, please take your child just to get checked.  I had DS there w/ us and she looked at his eyes and said he was fine right now but I should bring him to an eye doc at 18-24 months b/c of our family history.

Thanks for reading!

Re: Anyones toddler have glasses? and PSA

  • DS started wearing them at 18 months.  We put them on and they stayed on since then.  Sometimes when he's tired he'll take them off.  I had more of a problem with the other kids in daycare ripping them off his face.

But the good news is that the glasses will help your child see.  As soon as she realizes this (which should be the instant they are put on), she will want to wear them because there is less strain involved.  Kids adapt very easily.  They told me this when we first got his glasses and I didn't believe it until we witnessed it ourselves.

Good job on your pedi catching this early.  Usually it can be corrected if found early.  My pedi is the one who noticed DS's.  I was clueless, but once he pointed it out to me it was obvious.

ps.  Toddlers in glasses are A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!

This makes me sad :(   We're they mean to him about them?  Little girls are so Fing brutal and I don't want her being teased.  I can already picture how freaking adorable she is going to look in them but that's a mommy point of view, not a snotty little 3 or 4 year old.

I could have written this myself!  And no, at least for DS, it isn't a mean thing, it's more a "I want that too" thing!

  • It was just a toddler exploring thing.  It doesn't happen anymore and he's 4.  Other babies/toddlers are curious and he was at their level and it was easy to take them off of him.

  • My husband thought I was an idiot when I told him to add Emma to his vision plan, but when I had her eyes checked, they found astigmatism. Luckily it seems to be minor and correcting itself, but I believe in taking every precaution with these children, better safe that sorry. My husband also thought I was nuts for having her eyes checked at 6 months, but I don't regret it at all.
