Seriously? Holy Carb Count!

So, my nursing school friends are having a little reunion. They chose the most GD and Celiac unfriendly place ever, Olive Garden. I can't have the pasta and breadsticks anyway due to being Gluten Free. So, I was looking at my other options (their GF pasta sucks a** anyways). How the heck does the steak served with grilled veggies have 41g of carbs?! What kind of grilled veggies are you serving?! Wtf is that steak marinated in? Even the mixed grill skewers (steak/chicken) is 24g of carbs, that must be one massive, starchy grilled veggie "serving"... I'll call the local store and see how much this is going to cost but thinking I may just eat before I go and just enjoy the company. Until then I will repeat my mantra of 4 weeks and go caress my stash of cereal I'm taking with me to the hospital lol.

they have a gluten free garden fresh salad that's 12g and a chicken apricot dish that's 34g

  • Even with the carb counts that high, doesnt that fall within the amount allotted for meals? I believe I am supposed to have 55g carbs for lunch and dinner (meal plan is identical). So even if you chose one of those you would still be ok. Maybe only eat half of it and fill up on the unlimited salad? GL!

  • The last time I went, I had the apricot chicken, salad and split a breadstick with my 2yo. I wasn't sure how many carbs were in the dish because I didn't look before hand, but it seemed low. My numbers were great after.

I'm just trying to figure out how they got the carb count that high on a steak! It's definitely in my allotted amount but feels off that the carb counts for meat dishes is so high...
Even for a salad without the croutons I wouldn't expect 12g...

And where did y'all find the apricot chicken b/c that's not listed on their GF menu on their website...

  • careful with gluten-free substitutes like pastas or bread. Often they have a larger impact on your blood glucose.

I would opt for one of their salads and maybe a soup if they have something gluten-free.

  • If memory serves (and it may or may not) I think the steak and chicken dishes you are talking about are served with potatoes and maybe a balsamic glaze...that could account for some of the carbs. I don't know if it's GF, but I always ordered the chicken parm when we went and just didnt eat the pasta served on the side with it...and my #s were always fine.

Agreed! How the heck are they getting that many carbs! Maybe you can ask for no sauce or sauce on the side and just grilled meat and veggies or something. It is crazy what they account for but try not to stress too much!

And this is what I was wondering. Grilled veggie does not equal mashed potatoes! I'm just gonna have to call and figure out 1. if this location even offers what's listed online since they don't always and 2. what exactly is their side.

Wish they had chosen Maggiano's, Olive Garden is all frozen crap which is why their gluten free menu stinks.

And I definitely am aware of the gluten free being worse for carbs and spikes but it's not something I have a choice about unfortunately. That's why I was grateful to not have a GD class but an actual 1-on-1 with the dietician.
